Birds deserve special mention. They are extremely sensitive to airborne irritants of all kinds, and they should be well away from any ozone treatment and from the building until it has fully aired out. What Actually Fixes Pet Odor
The sequence that works has no shortcuts:
- Find the true extent. A blacklight in a dark room shows the actual footprint of old urine, which is usually far larger than the visible mark.

- Extract and rinse so the digested material and any residue are physically removed.
- Replace pad where it is saturated. Pad cannot be cleaned in place, and this is where most stubborn odor lives.
- Seal the subfloor with a shellac-based or odor-blocking primer if urine reached the wood.
- Only then consider an air treatment for anything still lingering.
