2. Enough volume. This is where most home attempts fail. People mist the surface of a spot that penetrated an inch into the backing and pad. The product has to reach as far as the urine did, which usually means applying considerably more than feels reasonable.

3. Real dwell time. Enzymes work slowly. Labels commonly ask for 10 to 30 minutes, and many pet formulas specify longer. How to Use One Properly

  1. Blot up as much liquid as possible with cool water and white towels if the spot is fresh.
  2. Find the true edges of the spot. A blacklight in a dark room shows the actual footprint, which is usually much larger than the visible mark.
  3. Apply the enzyme generously across the whole footprint, not just the center.
  4. Cover with a damp towel and leave it for the full dwell time.
  5. Blot out the excess, rinse with cool water, and blot again.
  6. Dry with a fan aimed across the spot.

Spot test in a closet first. On wool, keep pH mild and avoid oxygen bleach entirely, since wool cannot take high alkalinity or peroxide bleaching.

Where Enzymes Fail

Being honest about the limits saves people money:

  • Urine that reached the pad. The carpet backing resists liquid moving back up, so a topical application never reaches saturated pad. This is the single most common reason an enzyme "did not work."
  • Urine in the subfloor. Plywood absorbs and holds odor compounds. Sealing is the fix, not enzymes.
  • A spot cleaned with heat first. Once protein is set by hot water, enzyme action is much less effective.
  • Detergent residue in the way. Soap left from a previous attempt can interfere. Rinse before applying an enzyme.

An enzyme digests the source. An oxidizer such as hydrogen peroxide or oxygen bleach chemically alters the compound, which can work on odor and staining but carries fiber risk: wool takes no oxygen bleach, and peroxide can lighten some dyes. A deodorizer only addresses what you smell in the air.
