How the Crystals Form

What the Crystals Do to the Fiber

- They stay abrasive. Dried crystals are hard. Foot traffic grinds them against the yarn, which wears the fiber tips and makes the spot look dull and gray.
- They shift the pH. As urine ages it turns alkaline, and alkalinity attacks dye and fiber finishes. This is why old spots often look lighter or yellowed even after the soil is gone.
- They feed bacteria. Bacteria colonize the organic material and produce the ammonia and sulfur compounds you smell.

What Actually Breaks Them Down
Enzymes. Enzyme cleaners contain proteins that catalyze the breakdown of urea, uric acid compounds, and protein residue into smaller, water-soluble pieces that can then be rinsed out.
That is a chemical process, not a scrubbing process, and it has real requirements. It needs contact with the crystals, which means the enzyme must be applied at enough volume to reach the same depth the urine reached. It needs time, usually a long dwell rather than a quick wipe. Cold Water Only, and Here Is Why
Protein sets with heat. If you hit a urine spot or any protein soil with hot water first, you cook the protein onto the fiber and make it far harder to remove.
Use cold water on protein soil, every time. Hot extraction has its place later in the process, after the protein has been digested and flushed, but it is the wrong first move. High heat also destroys the enzymes themselves, so a hot rinse applied too soon simply cancels the treatment you just paid for.
Bleach Is Not an Option Here
Aged urine is ammoniated. Chlorine bleach mixed with ammonia releases chloramine gas, which is a serious respiratory hazard in a closed room.
Never pour bleach on a urine spot, and never follow one product with another without knowing what is in both. Bleach also destroys carpet dye on contact, leaving a light orange or white area. That is dye loss, and dye loss is a repair or a replacement, not a cleaning.
The Honest Limit of Any Treatment
Enzymes only work where they reach. If a small spot got a cup of urine, a saturating enzyme application and a proper rinse can genuinely finish the job.
