The moment steam exits the nozzle it expands, mixes with room air, and begins condensing. When it touches a surface it gives up its heat almost immediately into the mass of the tile, grout, or glass underneath. The surface warms; it does not reach and hold boiler temperature.
Killing microbes with moist heat is a function of temperature multiplied by time. Both have to be true at once. A pass that lasts two seconds delivers heat, but not sustained heat, and the surface begins cooling the moment the nozzle moves on.
That is the gap between what a steam cleaner does and what a disinfectant claim requires.

Most household steam appliances carry no such registration. Some commercial vapor systems do, and where they do, the claim comes with a prescribed technique -- a slow, defined pass rate, a specific tool, and often a required repetition. The claim belongs to that procedure, not to steam in the abstract.
If the distinction between the three outcomes is fuzzy, what cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting each mean sorts it out. And when you do disinfect, the surface has to be cleaned first, because soil physically shields organisms. That is why a disinfectant needs a clean surface first.
What Steam Is Genuinely Excellent At
Steam earns its keep as a mechanical tool, and it is very good at that job.
Heat and moisture soften greasy films, soap scum, and cooked-on residue so they wipe away with far less scrubbing. That is real work saved on oven interiors, range hoods, and stovetop crevices.
It reaches places a cloth cannot: window and door tracks, faucet bases, appliance seams, refrigerator gasket folds, and the corner where a tub meets tile. A detail nozzle plus a small brush is genuinely better than a toothbrush and spray.
It leaves no chemical residue, which matters in homes with small children, sensitive occupants, or anyone trying to reduce product use. And on porous grout it lifts embedded soil well, though sealing is the durable fix -- using a steam cleaner on grout covers the technique and its limits.
One thing to understand: steam does not remove soil by itself. It loosens soil. You still need a cloth or pad to carry it away, and a dirty pad just redistributes what you lifted.
Surfaces to Keep Steam Away From
Heat plus moisture is exactly the combination several common household materials cannot tolerate.

Also avoid hardwood, where steam drives moisture through the finish into the wood; unsealed stone and grout, which absorb it; wallpaper and painted drywall, where adhesive and paint lift; sealed or waxed floors of any kind; and delicate seals, gaskets, and electronics. Cold glass is another hazard, because a sudden blast of heat on a chilled pane creates thermal stress.
Using One Safely
Steam burns are real burns, and the vapor is nearly invisible at the point where it is hottest. Keep hands, forearms, and faces out of the plume, never aim it at a person or a pet, and let the unit depressurize before opening the boiler cap.
Use distilled water if your area has hard water, or scale will clog the nozzle. Work top to bottom, follow every pass with a clean dry cloth, and change pads often. Ventilate the room, because you are adding moisture to the air, and wipe down surfaces afterward so condensation does not sit in corners.
Read the appliance manual and the flooring manufacturer instructions before using a steam mop on any floor. If the flooring maker prohibits steam, that instruction governs, and using steam anyway can void the warranty.
