What Makes Crystal Different From Glass?

Traditional lead crystal contains lead oxide, which raises the refractive index and gives crystal its brilliance and its ring. Modern lead-free crystal substitutes other metal oxides for the same optical effect.

Both are softer than standard soda-lime glass and both are usually blown much thinner, especially in stemware bowls. Softer means it scratches and etches more readily. Thinner means it cannot absorb a sudden temperature change.

Why Is My Crystal Cloudy?

There are two completely different causes, and telling them apart decides whether the piece can be saved.

Film is a deposit sitting on the surface: hard water minerals, detergent residue, or a combination of both. It feels slightly rough, it looks worse when dry than wet, and it comes off with a soak in a mild acid such as diluted white vinegar followed by a hand wash.

Etching is chemical damage where the glass surface itself has been eaten into microscopic roughness. It looks the same wet and dry, it does not respond to any soak, and it is permanent.

What Causes Dishwasher Etching?

A combination of alkaline detergent, high water temperature, long cycle times, and soft water. Soft water is the surprise: with few minerals in the water to satisfy the detergent, it draws minerals out of the glass instead. That is why homes with water softeners often see the worst etching.

Phosphate-free detergents introduced for environmental reasons are more aggressive on glass than older formulations, which is why the problem became more common. Using more detergent than needed makes it worse, not better.

Can Hot Water Crack Crystal?

What Is the Right Way to Hand Wash Crystal?

Line the sink with a towel or rubber mat and remove rings and watches. Wash one piece at a time in warm water with a small amount of mild dish soap, using a soft cloth or a dedicated soft brush for the inside of a narrow bowl.

Rinse in water of the same temperature. Adding a small splash of white vinegar to the rinse helps prevent water spots. Dry immediately with a lint-free linen or microfiber towel, supporting the bowl rather than twisting it, and let the piece finish air drying upright before storing.

Can Cloudy Crystal Be Fixed?

Film can. Soak in a solution of white vinegar and warm water for fifteen to thirty minutes, or lay a vinegar-dampened cloth over the affected area, then wash by hand and dry.
