What Citric Acid Damages

Being food grade does not make it gentle on surfaces. It is an acid, and it behaves like one.

Safety Rules

Is citric acid stronger than vinegar?

At typical household dilutions it is comparable, but because you control the concentration you can mix it far stronger than vinegar comes in the bottle. For heavy limescale that means citric acid wins clearly. It also leaves no smell and no residue, and it costs much less per job.

Can I use citric acid on granite or marble?

No. Citric acid etches marble, travertine, and limestone permanently and degrades the sealer on granite. Etching is physical damage to the stone, not a stain, and refinishing is the only fix. Use a pH neutral stone cleaner or mild dish soap in warm water instead.

Is citric acid safe for coffee makers and kettles?
