Carpet Cleaning Solution Dilution Ratios Explained.

Mixing a carpet cleaner stronger than the label does not clean better -- it leaves residue that makes carpet re-soil faster. Here is how to read and measure a ratio.

How to Read a Dilution Ratio

Most carpet product labels use one of two formats. A ratio like 1:32 means one part concentrate to thirty-two parts water. An ounces-per-gallon figure states the same thing directly, since a US gallon holds 128 fluid ounces.

The conversion is straightforward. 1:32 is four ounces per gallon, because 128 divided by 32 is 4. 1:64 is two ounces per gallon. 1:16 is eight ounces. 1:128 is one ounce, which is why some labels for very concentrated products list it that way instead.

Read carefully whether the ratio means one part in thirty-two total parts or one part added to thirty-two parts of water. The difference is small at high dilutions and worth noticing at low ones. When a label lists ounces per gallon, use that -- it removes the ambiguity entirely.

Why Stronger Is Worse, Not Better

The intuition that more product cleans more is wrong here, and understanding why is the most useful thing in this article. A pre-spray works by releasing soil from the fiber so the rinse can carry it out. Whatever the rinse does not carry out stays in the carpet.

Extra concentrate does not release proportionally more soil, because the soil bond is being broken by chemistry that reaches saturation. What it does reliably produce is more surfactant left in the pile after extraction. That residue is sticky, and it attracts dry soil from the air and off shoes much faster than clean fiber does.

Over-concentration on wool adds a further risk, because wool cannot take high alkalinity and a doubled dose of an alkaline product pushes the pH outside the safe range of roughly 5 to 8.

Measure, Do Not Eyeball

Pouring by eye is unreliable in a predictable direction: nearly everyone over-pours. A "glug" of concentrate into a gallon jug is routinely two or three times the intended dose, and the error compounds every time you mix.

Use a marked measuring cup kept with the cleaning supplies and used for nothing else. A dedicated one-cup measure marked in ounces costs a couple of dollars and solves the problem permanently.

For a pump-up sprayer, mark the tank at the fill line for a known volume so you are measuring water accurately too. A ratio is only as good as both halves of it, and guessing the water volume introduces exactly the same error as guessing the concentrate.

Order of Mixing and Water Temperature

Put water in first, then add concentrate. Adding concentrate to an empty container and then filling produces heavy foam and, with some products, splashing of undiluted chemical -- which is a genuine eye hazard rather than an inconvenience.

Use warm water for powders. Powdered concentrates dissolve poorly in cold water, and undissolved granules do two bad things: they lodge in sprayer tips and machine jets, and they leave gritty residue in the carpet. Stir or shake until the solution is completely clear.

Hard water complicates the picture, because dissolved minerals bind with cleaning agents and reduce their effectiveness. Never Mix Products Together

One concentrate per container, always. Combining cleaning products is where carpet care becomes genuinely dangerous rather than merely ineffective.

Bleach combined with ammonia, with any acid such as vinegar, or with alcohol produces toxic gas. Hydrogen peroxide and vinegar together in a closed container is another combination to avoid. These are not cautious warnings -- they are reactions that send people to emergency rooms every year.

Even safe combinations usually cancel out. An acidic product and an alkaline product mixed together neutralize each other, and you end up with salty water. If a first product did not work, rinse it out thoroughly, then try a different one as a separate step. Mix Only What You Will Use

Diluted solution does not keep well. Once concentrate is mixed with water it starts to degrade, and enzymes in particular lose activity within hours to days rather than months. A jug of diluted product sitting in a garage for a season is usually worth nothing.
