TL;DR
Standard 3 percent drugstore hydrogen peroxide usually will not bleach synthetic carpet, but "usually" is doing real work in that sentence -- it lightens some dyes, especially older or deeply colored ones, and it must never be used on wool. Anything above 3 percent is a genuine bleaching risk on any fiber. Always test in a closet, and never mix peroxide and vinegar in one container.
Will hydrogen peroxide bleach carpet?
At 3 percent concentration, on nylon, polyester, triexta, and solution-dyed olefin, it usually does not cause visible color loss with short dwell times. It is an oxidizer, so the risk is never zero, and it rises quickly with higher concentration, longer contact, heat, and sunlight. Test before you trust it.
Hydrogen peroxide sits in a middle zone. It is far milder than chlorine bleach, which destroys carpet dye almost instantly, and stronger than a general-purpose spotter. That middle position is exactly why it needs a test rather than a rule.
What concentration are you actually using?
The brown bottle from a drugstore is 3 percent hydrogen peroxide in water. That is the only concentration most people should consider putting on carpet.

Hair developer is the common accident. It is peroxide at several times drugstore strength, it gets used in bathrooms and bedrooms, and a spill leaves a light spot that people mistake for a cleaning failure. Fiber by fiber
Nylon. Generally tolerates 3 percent with short dwell. Nylon's acid dyes are more vulnerable than disperse dyes, so darker and older nylon carpet is the most likely to lighten. Test.
Polyester and triexta. Disperse dyes are fairly resistant to peroxide at low concentration. These are among the safer fibers for a careful 3 percent application.
Solution-dyed olefin. The most resistant common carpet fiber, because the color is in the polymer rather than on the surface. Peroxide has very little to attack.
Wool. Never. Hydrogen peroxide and oxygen bleach both yellow wool and weaken the protein fiber, even in dilute form and even with a short dwell. There is no safe home use of peroxide on a wool carpet or rug. This is the same reason oxygen bleach is off-limits on wool.
Silk and viscose blends. Also no. These are damaged by water alone in many cases, and adding an oxidizer compounds it.
The mixing rule
Never combine hydrogen peroxide and vinegar in the same container. Stored together they form peracetic acid, which is corrosive and irritating to skin, eyes, and airways. Using one, rinsing, and later using the other is a different situation, but they do not belong in one bottle.

How to test properly
Testing takes two minutes and prevents a permanent problem.
- Find a hidden area -- inside a closet, under a piece of furniture that never moves, or behind a door.
- Apply a few drops of your 3 percent solution to a white cotton cloth, then press the cloth into the pile.
- Leave it 3 to 5 minutes, roughly the dwell you plan to use on the real spot.
- Blot, rinse the test area with cool water, and dry it with a hair dryer on cool or a fan.
- Look at both the carpet and the cloth in good light. Color on the cloth means dye is moving. A lighter patch on the carpet means the peroxide is bleaching.

What peroxide is actually good for
Used carefully on synthetic carpet, 3 percent hydrogen peroxide works on a specific short list:
- Blood. It is one of the better home treatments, though the water must be cold. Hot water sets protein permanently.
- Some organic stains -- coffee, tea, fruit juice, grass -- where the color is oxidizable.
- Old urine stains as part of a treatment, though the enzyme step matters more.

Careful application
Apply peroxide with a spray bottle or a saturated cloth, never by pouring. Keep the dwell short, 5 minutes or less on a first attempt. Blot with white towels -- colored towels can transfer their own dye into a wet, freshly oxidized area. Rinse with cool water and blot dry.
Keep it out of direct sunlight while it works. Light accelerates the oxidation, and a sunny window can turn an acceptable dwell into a bleached patch. Store peroxide in its original brown bottle, since it breaks down into plain water when exposed to light, which is also why an old open bottle often does nothing at all.
