Insulated glass units add another wrinkle. The outer pane heats while the inner pane stays at room temperature, and the seal between them takes the strain. Repeated thermal cycling is one of the ways a sealed unit eventually fogs.

The Winter Cleaning Question

This comes up two ways, and both matter.

The first is windshields. Pouring hot water over a frozen windshield is a common winter shortcut and a common way to buy a replacement. Automotive glass is laminated rather than annealed, but the temperature differential is enormous and edge stress does the rest. Use the defroster and a scraper.

The second is house windows. Washing exterior windows in freezing weather has its own problems beyond cracking: the solution freezes on the glass, the squeegee skips over ice, and any water in the track freezes the sash shut. The Summer Version of the Same Problem

Thermal shock runs both directions. Glass that has been in direct sun all afternoon can be very hot, and hitting it with cold hose water creates the same differential in reverse.

The Practical Rules

  • Use lukewarm water. Not hot, not ice cold, in any season. It cleans just as well.
  • Touch the glass first. If it is very cold or very hot to the hand, wait for the shade or the sun to change the situation.
  • Wet the pane gradually. Start at one edge and work across rather than throwing a full bucket at the center.
  • Do not aim a pressure washer at glass. Both the temperature and the impact force are wrong.
  • Inspect the edges. A chip at the perimeter, a crack in the glazing bead, or a pane that rattles in the frame all raise the risk.
