What you are left with is damp salty residue in the pile, which can attract soil later. If you want the properties of an acid, use dilute vinegar alone. If you want the properties of a mild alkali, use baking soda alone. Together they are just water with extra steps. - Use a thin dusting, not a heavy layer. You should still see the carpet.
- Leave it 15 to 30 minutes rather than overnight. Longer dwell mostly means deeper settling.
- Vacuum slowly with several overlapping passes.
- Clean or replace the filter afterward, every time.
- Do not use it more than occasionally, and never as a routine weekly habit.

Better alternatives for odor
- Find the source. Odor is a symptom. A urine spot, a spill under furniture, a damp pad, or a problem in the subfloor will keep producing smell no matter what you sprinkle.
- Enzyme cleaner for anything biological. Urine, vomit, milk, and food spills all need digestion, not absorption.
- Ventilation and airflow. Moving air removes odor molecules; a closed room concentrates them.
- Professional extraction. Removing the material producing the smell is the only permanent fix.
- Pad replacement when contamination went through the carpet, which it often has.
If a smell persists after the carpet has been properly cleaned and dried, look beyond the carpet -- the pad, the subfloor, or a moisture source. Persistent musty odor with visible growth is a remediation question rather than a cleaning question.
