Why Does Extra Cleaner Make Things Dirtier?
Because surfactants are designed to hold onto soil, and they keep doing that after you walk away. Whatever is left behind on the surface continues attracting and holding dust and oil. The surface then loads up faster than it would have if you had used less product and rinsed properly.
What Residue Actually Does
Three separate effects stack up, and together they explain most "I just cleaned this" frustration.
It attracts soil. A surfactant film is slightly tacky and holds airborne dust and oily fingerprints. On a floor, footprints reappear within a day.
It dulls the finish. Layers of dried product scatter light, so a floor or a counter loses its sheen and looks hazy no matter how much you buff it.
It builds up. Each cleaning adds a little more, so the problem compounds. Many "the floor finish is worn out" complaints are actually years of product buildup sitting on a finish that is fine underneath.
The same thing shows on glass as streaking, on stainless steel as a smeared film, and in a bathroom as a slick that never quite rinses away.
Foam Is Not Cleaning Power
The strongest reason people overdose a product is that foam feels like performance.
Foam is mostly cosmetic. Manufacturers add foam-boosting ingredients because customers associate suds with strength, and many highly effective commercial products barely foam at all.
Excess foam actively causes problems. It holds soil in suspension against the surface rather than releasing it into the water, it makes rinsing much harder, and in a mop bucket it hides how dirty the water has become.
If your mop water is foaming after several rooms, you used too much, and the later rooms are getting a wash in soil-loaded solution.
The Dilution Was Tested, Your Guess Was Not
Product formulas are balanced at a specific concentration.
At the labeled dilution, the surfactants, builders, chelating agents, and solvents are in the proportion that lifts soil and releases it into the water. Going stronger does not scale that up. It usually just adds more of what will not rinse away.
On an EPA-registered disinfectant, this matters more. The tested germ-kill claim applies at the labeled dilution and the labeled contact time, and nothing else. Mixing it stronger does not upgrade the claim, does not shorten the dwell time, and is inconsistent with the label directions. What to Do Instead of Adding More
When a surface is not coming clean, the useful adjustments are almost never "more product."
Give it dwell time. Most cleaners need to sit and work. Spraying and wiping in the same motion is the most common reason a product appears to fail.
Add friction. Scrubbing does a large share of the work on stuck soil, and a brush or a folded cloth face applies far more of it than a flat swipe.

Change the water. Grey mop water is soil in suspension being reapplied.
Match the chemistry. An alkaline cleaner will not remove limescale at any concentration, and an acid will not cut grease.

Fixing a Surface That Is Already Coated
Buildup is reversible, and it takes plain water and patience rather than another product.
Go over the surface with clean warm water and a well-wrung cloth or mop, changing the water frequently, and keep going until the cloth stops feeling slippery. On a floor this may take three or four passes, and the change in appearance is usually obvious.
For alkaline residue on a surface that tolerates acid, a very dilute vinegar rinse followed by a clean water rinse can help cut the film. Do not do this on natural stone, on unsealed surfaces, or anywhere a chlorine product has been used recently, and never combine the two.
