If the glass comes out clear, you have a mineral film and it is fixable. If the haze is unchanged, or the glass looks clear when wet and cloudy again when dry, the surface is etched and no cleaner will restore it.

How Do You Fix Mineral Film on Glassware?

Three other adjustments help.

  • Run the tap at the sink until it is hot before starting the cycle. Most dishwashers do not heat the first fill much, and cold incoming water leaves more deposit.
  • Fill the softener reservoir if your machine has one. Many models sold in hard water regions include a salt compartment that most owners never open.
  • Do not overload the top rack. Glasses that touch each other or block the spray shield each other from the rinse.

What Causes Etched Glass?

Cut the detergent dose, especially if you have soft water. Use the shortest adequate cycle and skip the highest heat setting for glass loads. Wash fine or thin glassware by hand in warm water.

Why the Same Glass Looks Fine Wet and Cloudy Dry

A mineral film behaves the opposite way. It is visible whether the glass is wet or dry, and it often feels slightly rough or chalky under a fingertip.

Neither condition makes a glass unsafe to drink from. Etched glass is cosmetically ruined, not hazardous.

Habits That Prevent Both Problems

Load glasses at an angle so water runs off rather than pooling in the base. Leave space between them. Keep the dishwasher filter clean, since a loaded filter recirculates gritty water over everything in the machine.

Do not pre-rinse dishes to spotless. Modern detergents need some soil to work on, and a machine full of rinsed dishes is closer to the soft water situation that causes etching.

Never combine dishwasher detergent with bleach, and never mix bleach with any acidic descaler or with an ammonia-based cleaner. Those combinations produce toxic gas.
