What makes stainless steel stainless
Stainless steel contains chromium, and chromium reacts with oxygen in the air to form a microscopically thin oxide film across the entire surface. That film is the passive layer, and it is the only reason the steel underneath does not rust.
The passive layer is self-healing. Scratch it and, given clean air and moisture, it reforms within minutes to hours. That is why stainless survives daily abuse in a kitchen.
What it cannot survive is a sustained chloride attack. Chloride ions break the film down locally, in tiny spots, and once the film is gone the iron in the steel is exposed and starts to corrode -- deeper and deeper into the same small hole. That is pitting corrosion, and it goes down rather than spreading out, which is why a pit can be surprisingly deep for how small it looks.

Does bleach damage stainless steel?
Yes. Chlorine bleach is a chloride source, and chloride breaks down the passive chromium oxide layer that protects stainless steel. The result is pitting and orange rust spots, usually appearing within hours to days. Rinse immediately with plain water and dry if bleach ever contacts stainless.

The ventilation and never-mix rule
Bleach is dangerous in ways that have nothing to do with metal, and the kitchen is where the mistakes happen.
Bleach mixed with ammonia -- which is in many glass cleaners, and in urine -- produces chloramine gas. Bleach mixed with vinegar, a descaler, or a toilet bowl cleaner produces chlorine gas. Bleach mixed with rubbing alcohol produces chloroform and related compounds.
Never combine bleach with anything else, ever. Use one product at a time, rinse surfaces and cloths between products, and ventilate the room while you work. If you smell something sharp and your eyes sting, leave the room and open windows.

Note that vinegar is fine as a brief treatment followed by a thorough plain-water rinse, but should not be left sitting either. Any acid left in contact with stainless for long periods can also attack the passive layer.
Clean with the grain
Most stainless has a directional brushed finish -- fine parallel lines. Wiping across them drags soil into the grooves and leaves visible streaks; wiping along them cleans the grooves out.
Look at the surface in good light and you can see which way the lines run. On an appliance door they are often horizontal; on a sink basin they may change direction between the bottom and the sides.

Heat tint is not dirt
Blue, gold, or rainbow discoloration on a stainless pan or a grill is heat tint -- the passive layer thickened by high heat, which changes how it reflects light. It is cosmetic and harmless, and the metal underneath is fine.
Scrubbing it with abrasives does more harm than the tint does. A mild acidic treatment such as a vinegar wipe followed by a full rinse reduces it somewhat, and many cooks simply leave it. It is not burnt-on food and it is not damage.
Preventing pitting in practice
Rinse and dry. That covers most of it. Do not let salty water, bleach, or cleaning products dry on the surface, and do not leave a wet dishcloth or sponge sitting in a stainless sink overnight -- that is a classic cause of a ring of pits.
Do not soak stainless cookware in bleach solutions. Do not use bleach to clean a stainless sink; dish soap and a nylon scrubber handle it, with a vinegar wipe and rinse for scale.
Keep chloride pool and spa chemicals away from stainless fixtures and outdoor railings, and rinse outdoor stainless after storms in coastal areas.
