Is Extraction the Same as Steam Cleaning?
No, though the industry uses the terms interchangeably and the marketing name has stuck. Hot water extraction uses hot liquid water forced through jets under pressure, then recovered by vacuum. Steam is water in its gas phase, above 212 degrees F, and it carries very little water and no way to rinse. No mainstream carpet cleaning method cleans with actual steam.
The distinction matters because true steam appliances behave completely differently. A steam mop pushed across carpet does not rinse anything, leaves moisture with no recovery, and its heat can damage backing adhesives and set protein stains. How an Extraction Pass Works
The tool is a wand: a handle, a length of tube, and a flat head that sits on the carpet.
Inside the head are one or more jets that spray solution at pressure, and a vacuum slot behind them connected by hose to the machine. The head is shaped to seal against the pile so the vacuum can pull hard rather than sucking room air.
The technician pushes the wand forward with the spray on, then pulls it back with the spray off. The pull stroke is the recovery. Then the wand is moved over by slightly less than its width and the pattern repeats, so every part of the carpet is covered without gaps.

Wet Extraction Versus Low Moisture Methods
Extraction is a wet method by definition. It applies real volume and recovers most of it.
That is its advantage. It reaches soil near the base of the pile and in the backing that surface methods cannot touch, and it physically flushes contamination out rather than encapsulating or absorbing it.
It is also its cost. Water goes in, and not all of it comes back, so drying takes hours. Low moisture methods -- encapsulation, bonnet, dry compound -- clean the upper pile with much less water and dry in one to two hours, but leave deeper soil behind.
Neither is universally better. Commercial maintenance programs use low moisture frequently and extraction periodically. Residential work is usually the reverse: extraction is the main event, with spot work in between.
Does All the Water Come Back Out of the Carpet?
No. A well-run extraction recovers most of the water it puts down and never all of it, because carpet fiber holds moisture by absorption and capillary action. That residual water is what makes drying take 6 to 12 hours, and it is the source of several problems people blame on the cleaning itself.
If too much water goes in relative to what comes out, the backing and pad get wet. Wet backing is the root of wicking, where soil in the backing rises to the surface as the pile dries, which is why a spot can look gone and reappear the next morning. The tool at the carpet is similar. What changes is what powers it.
A truck mounted unit lives in a van. It generates its own heat, has large vacuum blowers, and runs long hose lines into the building. It typically delivers more heat and more recovery, which means faster drying.
A portable extractor is a wheeled machine brought inside, plugged into a wall outlet, with its own pump and vacuum motors. It is limited by household current, so heat and vacuum are lower, but it reaches places a hose run cannot -- high rise apartments, offices far from the curb, boats, and stairs.

What Extraction Cannot Fix
Dye loss. A bleached looking spot is missing color, not soil. Rinsing does nothing.
Pile reversal and shading. These are optical effects caused by pile lying in different directions. They are not dirt and extraction will not change them.
Matting and twist loss in traffic lanes. Worn fiber is worn. Cleaning removes the gray and reveals the wear underneath.

Fiber damage from a previous bad clean. Fuzzing, felting on wool, and swirl marks are texture damage rather than soil.
