What does a dilution ratio mean?
A dilution ratio expresses the proportion of concentrated product to water in a working solution. The first number is almost always the concentrate and the second is the water. So 1:10 is one part concentrate to ten parts water, and 1:64 is one part concentrate to sixty-four parts water.
The two ways ratios are written, and the confusion between them
Most labels use the parts format above. Some, though, express dilution as a total -- meaning 1:10 describes one part product in a total of ten parts, so nine parts water.
The difference is small at high dilution and meaningful at low dilution. When a label is ambiguous, the manufacturer directions in ounces per gallon or milliliters per liter are the safer guide, because those leave no room for interpretation.
Percentages appear too. A one percent solution is roughly 1:100, and a five percent solution is roughly 1:20. Ready-to-use products are already diluted and should never be diluted again.

The measurements worth memorizing
One US gallon is 128 fluid ounces, which makes the math easier than it looks.
At 1:32, you need four ounces of concentrate per gallon. At 1:64, two ounces per gallon. At 1:128, one ounce per gallon. At 1:10, roughly twelve and a half ounces per gallon.
For a quart spray bottle, which holds 32 ounces, a 1:32 dilution is one ounce of concentrate topped with water, and 1:64 is half an ounce.

What happens when you use too much concentrate
This is the more common error, because more feels like better.
Residue. Excess surfactant is not fully rinsed away and leaves a tacky film. That film attracts dust and soil, so the surface gets dirty faster than it did before. Sticky floors after mopping are almost always this.
Streaking and haze on glass and stainless, for the same reason.
Surface damage. Concentrates that are safe at working dilution can dull a finish, degrade a sealer, or discolor a material at full strength.
Wasted money. A four-times overdose is four times the cost for a worse result.
Air quality and skin irritation both rise with concentration.
What happens when you use too little
A disinfectant fails its claim. The contact times printed on a label were tested at a specific dilution. Below that dilution, the tested claim does not apply, and there is no way to compensate with extra time.
A degreaser stalls. You end up scrubbing what the chemistry was supposed to loosen.
Hard water eats the difference. In hard water areas, part of every dose is consumed by minerals before it cleans anything, so an already-thin mix ends up weaker than intended.
Measure, do not eyeball
Free-pouring is where most dilution error comes from. A glug is not a unit.
Use a measuring cup, a pump dispenser, or a marked dosing chamber. Many concentrates ship with a dosing cap, and dilution control systems on commercial containers exist precisely because eyeballing is unreliable at scale.
Fill the bottle with most of the water first, then add the concentrate, then top up. Adding water to concentrate rather than concentrate to water reduces foaming and reduces splash-back of the concentrated chemical, which matters most with anything caustic or acidic.
Label every bottle you fill
An unlabeled spray bottle is a genuine hazard, not a housekeeping nitpick. Someone else will eventually use it, and there is no way to know what is inside or how strong it is.

Where to find the right number
The dilution instructions are on the label, usually on the back panel under directions for use, and often broken out by task -- one ratio for light cleaning, a stronger one for heavy soil, and a specific one for disinfecting. Use the one that matches your task rather than defaulting to the strongest.
