Solvent spotters are applied to a white cloth first, not poured on the carpet, then worked from the outside of the stain inward with blotting pressure. The goal is to move the dissolved soil into the towel rather than push it deeper into the backing.
The steps most professionals follow look like this:
- Vacuum or scrape away anything solid, and chill hardened wax before scraping.
- Test the solvent on a hidden area such as inside a closet, then wait several minutes and check the towel for dye transfer.
- Apply a small amount to a white cotton towel, not directly to the pile.
