The two growths are not the same problem

People lump them together because they arrive together, but they behave differently and deserve different responses.

Algae appears as dark grey or black streaking that runs down the slope, usually starting under a shaded section or below a chimney. It is a cyanobacteria that survives on airborne nutrients and the moisture in dew, and it feeds partly on the limestone filler used in some shingles. It stains, it makes a roof look ten years older than it is, and it slightly raises heat absorption. It does not tear the roof apart.

Moss is a true plant with structure. It anchors in the granule layer, builds up in mats along the shingle butt edges, and holds water there indefinitely. That trapped water works under the shingle, lifts the edge, and breaks the wind seal. Moss is worth acting on. Algae is worth deciding about.

What causes black streaks on a roof?

Black roof streaks are algae growing on the shingle surface. Spores land from the air, establish in the dampest area of the roof, and spread downward as rain carries them along the slope. Shade, humidity, and any surface that keeps the shingle wet longer -- overhanging branches, a north-facing plane -- accelerate it.

The four conditions that decide whether your roof grows things

Shade. The single biggest factor. Overhanging limbs, a neighboring building, or a north-facing slope keeps a plane from drying, and growth follows the shade line almost exactly. Homeowners are often surprised that one plane of a roof is covered while another is clean.

Standing moisture. Anything that keeps water on the surface longer -- a shallow pitch, a valley that pools, a clogged gutter backing water up under the first course -- extends the wet hours per day.

Debris. Needles, leaves, and seed litter hold moisture like a sponge and add organic matter for moss to root in. Roof valleys and the area behind a chimney collect it first.

Nutrient supply. Algae draws on airborne particulate and, on some shingles, the limestone filler in the mat. Trees dropping pollen and sap onto the roof feed the whole ecosystem.

Change any of these and you change the outcome. Change none of them and the growth returns on the same schedule after every cleaning.

Trimming back trees is the highest-value fix

If you do one thing, do this one.

Cutting overhanging limbs back from the roof plane increases direct sun, improves airflow, reduces the debris load, and cuts the shaded hours that let moisture sit. Nothing else you can do produces that many benefits from one afternoon of work. Large limbs over a house are an arborist job rather than a ladder-and-pole-saw job.

Zinc and copper strips: the quiet prevention

This is the trick the trade uses and homeowners rarely hear about.

A strip of zinc or copper installed near the ridge line, exposed to the weather, releases trace metal ions every time it rains. The runoff carries those ions down the slope and suppresses algae and moss growth in the wash path.

The pattern is easy to spot in the wild -- look at any older roof with a galvanized chimney flashing or a metal vent and you will usually see a clean stripe running straight down from it while the rest of the plane is streaked. That stripe is the effect working.

Points worth knowing. Coverage is limited to what the runoff reaches, so wide roofs may need more than one strip. Installation goes under a course of shingles near the ridge, which is a roofing task rather than an adhesive-tape task. And copper runoff can stain some surfaces below, so the discharge path matters.

Keeping the gutters clear is roof maintenance

A clogged gutter backs water up under the lowest shingle course, keeping that band permanently damp. That is why moss so often starts along the bottom edge of a roof and works upward.

Getting rid of what is already there

Do not scrape moss aggressively. It takes granules with it and it puts you on a wet slope. Roof work is genuinely dangerous, and a pressure wand's recoil on a ladder is a documented way to fall. This is a hire-out job for most homes.

Are algae-resistant shingles worth it?

If you are replacing the roof anyway, generally yes, since the added cost is small. They use copper-containing granules to suppress algae for a warranted period that varies by manufacturer. They do not prevent moss, and they are not a reason to replace a roof that is otherwise fine.
