The rule most people get wrong is the cloth mask. A cloth or surgical mask does essentially nothing for the particles that matter in a cleanout. They were designed to catch droplets going out, not fine dust coming in.

What Mask to Wear for Mold and Dust

Match the mask to the hazard. A disposable N95 filters at least ninety-five percent of airborne particles and is appropriate for general household dust, attic insulation fibers, and light cleanout work.

Step up to a reusable elastomeric half mask with P100 filters when you are dealing with mold, dried rodent or bird droppings, sustained demolition dust, or anything that smells strongly of decay. P100 filters catch at least 99.97 percent of particles and the rubber seal holds far better than a paper edge.

Add cartridges rated for organic vapors on top of the P100 filters if solvents, fuel, or strong chemical odors are present. Particulate filters do nothing for gases.

Dust, Mold, and Droppings Are Different Problems

Ordinary dust is mostly a nuisance and an irritant, though old buildings hold decades of it and it can carry insulation fibers, silica, and lead residue.

Mold is a biological hazard. Disturbing a moldy mattress or a water-damaged box releases spores that keep circulating for hours. People with asthma, allergies, or compromised immune systems can react badly to exposures that another person shrugs off. Mold also means water, and water damage means the structure under it may not be sound.

Rodent and bird droppings are the most serious of the three for a healthy adult, because dried droppings can carry pathogens that become airborne when swept. Never dry sweep or vacuum them with a household vacuum. Mist the area with a disinfectant solution first, let it soak, then remove with damp paper towels into a sealed bag. Fit Is Most of the Protection

A respirator rated at ninety-nine point nine percent that leaks around the edge performs like no respirator at all. Air takes the easy path.

For an N95, use both straps, one below the ears and one above, and press the nose wire firmly across the bridge of your nose with two fingers, not one. Then check the seal: cover the mask with both hands and exhale sharply. If air escapes around the edges, adjust and retest.

Facial hair breaks the seal. A beard along the seal line makes any tight-fitting respirator ineffective, and no amount of tightening fixes it. If you will not shave, a powered air-purifying respirator with a loose hood is the alternative.

Half masks need the same check, done as a negative pressure test. Cover both filter inlets, inhale gently, and the mask should collapse slightly against your face and hold. Replace filters when breathing gets noticeably harder, when you can smell what you are working in, or after any heavy exposure.

Ventilation and the Rest of the Kit

A respirator is one layer. Air movement is another and it often does more.

Open windows on opposite sides of the space and put a box fan in one window blowing outward, so the room stays under slight negative pressure and dust leaves rather than spreading through the house. Close doors to rooms you are not working in. If dust is heavy, hang plastic sheeting over doorways.

Wet methods beat masks. Misting a surface before disturbing it keeps particles down better than any filter catches them.

Round out the kit with sealed eye protection rather than open safety glasses, disposable coveralls or clothes you will wash separately, and gloves suited to the hazard. Shower and change before you sit on your own furniture, because dust rides home on clothing.

Take breaks outside. Working in a respirator is genuinely tiring, and heat builds up fast in a hot attic or a closed room. Heavy cleanouts, especially the ones described in the hoarding cleanup guide, often need a two-hour-on, break-off rhythm.

When to Stop and Call Someone

Some conditions are past the point where a mask is the right answer.

Stop if you find suspected asbestos or lead paint. Buildings from before roughly 1980 may contain asbestos in floor tile, pipe insulation, and popcorn ceilings, and lead in painted surfaces. Stop if mold covers a large area of a wall or ceiling, if there is standing water or a sewage backup, or if the space smells of gas. Stop if you find medical sharps, chemical containers you cannot identify, or anything that belongs in the what qualifies as hazardous waste category.

And stop if you have a respiratory or immune condition. There is no protective equipment that makes a spore-heavy room a reasonable place for someone with asthma to spend an afternoon.
