Detergent and softener residue. Too much product in a low-water machine leaves a gray-yellow film that looks exactly like dirt. Bleaching does not remove it, and adding more detergent makes it worse, which is why more detergent makes clothes dirtier rather than cleaner.

Fiber yellowing. Cotton yellows with age, heat, and chlorine bleach exposure. Once the fiber itself has changed, no cleaning product reverses it. This is the case where bluing genuinely helps, because you cannot remove what is not a deposit.

How to use oxygen bleach on whites

Dissolve the powder in warm water first. Sodium percarbonate needs warmth to activate, and a cold-water mix simply underperforms. Water that is comfortably warm to the hand is enough.

Soak for one to six hours. Oxygen bleach is slow, and the difference between a thirty-minute soak and a four-hour soak on dingy whites is substantial. Overnight in cool water is reasonable for heavy cases.

Wash normally afterward. The soak loosens and oxidizes the soil, and the wash carries it away.

Repeat rather than doubling the dose. Two normal-strength soaks beat one concentrated one, and a strong alkaline solution can weaken cotton with repeated use.

How to use bluing without turning laundry blue

The single largest risk with bluing is overdose, and the resulting blue-tinged laundry is difficult to correct.

Dilute it before it touches fabric. Bluing is sold concentrated and the typical dose is a few drops in a quart of water, then that mixture added to a full rinse. Never pour bluing directly onto a garment or into a dispenser undiluted, because a concentrated drop leaves a permanent blue spot.

Add it at the rinse, not the wash. Detergent interferes with even distribution.

Start with less than the label suggests and build up over successive washes. The effect is cumulative and easy to overshoot.

Use it only on whites. On cream, ivory, or off-white items it produces a gray cast rather than a bright one.

Skip it entirely on anything you plan to keep permanently white through many washes with no other product, since the tint gradually accumulates.

What neither one fixes

Rust stains. Oxygen bleach can set them. Rust needs an acidic remover, used separately.

Bleach spots from chlorine bleach. These are dye loss, not stains. The color is gone, and nothing replaces it.

Set-in protein stains. Blood, sweat, and milk need cold water and an enzyme product before any oxidizer. Heat sets them permanently.

Yellow underarm marks. These are usually a reaction between antiperspirant aluminum salts and body oils, bonded into the fiber. An enzyme pretreat plus an oxygen soak is the best approach, and results are often partial.

Safety and ventilation
