An in-line washing machine filter plumbed into the drain hose captures the highest share, and some jurisdictions have begun requiring these on new machines. It is the most effective and the most involved to install.
A mesh laundry bag designed to hold synthetics reduces released fibers by keeping items from abrading against the drum and against each other. It is inexpensive and requires no installation.
A reusable ball or disc that sits loose in the drum collects a portion of the fibers as it tumbles. It is the least effective and the easiest to adopt.
Whichever you use, empty the captured lint into the trash, not the sink. Rinsing a filter into a drain undoes the entire point.

They shed too, but their fibers are cellulose and break down rather than persisting. They also handle bleach and high heat better than microfiber, which is damaged by both.
Keep microfiber for the jobs where its structure genuinely earns its place: dusting, glass, stainless steel, and any surface you want to clean with water instead of a product. A mixed set of tools is both better cleaning and less plastic.

Microfiber is a plastic textile with a real shedding problem and a real environmental benefit, and neither cancels the other. Abandoning it for disposables is a clear step backward; using it thoughtlessly and washing it constantly is a step backward too.
