That is why the marketing language usually says something like "helps maintain water temperature." Read that literally. It is an accurate description, not a hedge.
Why Heat Matters at All
Heat is one of four cleaning factors, alongside chemistry, agitation, and time. Warmer water lowers surface tension so solution penetrates the pile better, and it speeds up the chemical reactions detergent depends on. Roughly speaking, a modest temperature increase can meaningfully speed the reaction.

The Tap Water Math
Here is the practical version. Fill the tank from your hot tap and the water starts near your water heater's setting. It then cools in the tank, cools again in the line, and cools once more the moment it hits room-temperature carpet.
A built-in element slows the first two losses somewhat and does nothing about the third. So the difference between a heated and unheated home machine, both filled with hot tap water, is real but small. The difference between filling with hot tap water and filling with cold water is much larger, and it is free.
Is a Heated Model Worth the Extra Money?
Usually not on its own. If two machines differ mainly by the heater, the money is better spent on stronger vacuum recovery, a better brush design, or a hose and hand tool for stairs and upholstery.
Recovery power is the real bottleneck on any household extractor, and it is the one thing technique cannot compensate for. Heat you can substitute with hot tap water and longer dwell. Where a Heater Does Help
There are cases where it earns its place.
Long sessions. On a whole-house job, tank water sitting between refills cools noticeably, and an element keeps it usable.
Oily soil. Grease and body oils respond better to warmth, so kitchens, entries, and pet-favored spots see more benefit than bedrooms do.
Cold houses. In an unheated room in winter, everything cools faster and the element offsets some of that.
Homes with a low water heater setting. If your tap water is not very hot to begin with, an element gives you a floor to work from.
When Heat Is Actually a Problem
More heat is not universally better, and three cases matter.
Wool. Wool cannot take high heat, high alkalinity, or oxygen bleach, and needs to stay roughly between pH 5 and 8. Hot water plus alkaline detergent can felt, shrink, and permanently distort wool fiber. Wool needs a different approach than any heated home machine offers.
Protein stains. Blood, milk, egg, and pet accidents set permanently in hot water. These need cold water plus an enzyme product. Getting this backward creates a mark that no amount of later cleaning removes.
Some stain-resist finishes and older adhesives. Excessive heat can affect topical finishes and, on tufted carpet, prolonged heat and moisture together stress the latex layer holding the backing together.
What If You Have No Hot Water?
You can still clean, and the result is closer to a heated job than you would guess. Increase dwell time, pre-treat traffic lanes and spots directly, agitate a bit more with a soft brush, and accept a slightly slower pace.

How to Get Heat Benefits Without Paying for Them
Fill from the hot tap, not the cold one, and run the tap until it is genuinely hot before filling. Fill smaller volumes more often so the water spends less time cooling in the tank. Work in a warm room rather than one with the window open. And pre-treat spots so the chemistry has dwell time working for it instead of relying on temperature.
Those four habits close most of the gap between a heated and unheated machine, and they cost nothing.
