Removing overspray safely comes down to two questions asked in order: what kind of paint is it, and what did it land on. Latex on plain glass comes off with warm soapy water and a wet blade. Identify the Paint First
Latex and other water-based paints stay slightly soluble for a long time. Press a rag soaked in warm water on a speck for a couple of minutes -- if it softens, swells, or turns rubbery, it is water-based, and this is the easy case.
Oil-based paint and most spray enamels will not budge with water. They need a solvent, more patience, and more caution about the surface underneath.
Fresh overspray is dramatically easier than cured overspray. Water-based paint can often be wiped off in the first hour with a damp cloth alone. After a few weeks of curing, the same specks may need mechanical removal.
Before You Scrape Anything, Check the Age of the House
Homes built before 1978 may have lead-based paint, and homes of similar vintage can contain asbestos in textured ceilings, floor tile, and joint compound. Scraping or sanding either one creates a hazard that no cleaning method addresses.

How Do You Get Paint Off Glass Without Scratching It?
Wet the glass, keep it wet, and hold a new razor blade at a low angle -- roughly fifteen to twenty degrees -- pushing in one direction only. A dry blade on dry glass will scratch. A wet blade on wet glass, moved in one direction, generally will not.
Work in short strokes and lift the blade to return rather than dragging it back. Change blades often; a nicked edge is what causes scratches. Keep the glass soapy the entire time so the debris floats rather than grinding.

Two hard exceptions. Never use a blade on tempered glass with a surface coating, on low-emissivity coated panes, on window film or tint, or on any plastic glazing such as acrylic or polycarbonate. All of those scratch or delaminate permanently. Test in a corner if you are unsure, and if you cannot identify the glass, do not use a blade at all.
Overspray on Other Surfaces
Painted walls and trim. Do not scrape. Soften with warm soapy water and lift with a soft cloth. Melamine sponges remove paint but also burnish and remove the finish underneath, so they should be a last resort and always tested in a hidden spot first.
Cabinets and finished wood. Warm water and mild dish soap only. Solvents strip clear coats. If a speck will not release, a plastic scraper or a fingernail at a low angle is safer than anything metal.
Countertops. Natural stone is acid-sensitive, so no vinegar or acidic strippers on marble, travertine, or limestone. Engineered quartz takes no abrasives, no bleach, and no high heat. On both, warm water, mild soap, and patience with a plastic edge.
Floors. Damp cloth on hardwood and laminate, never a wet one. On luxury vinyl plank, no steam and no abrasive pads, because heat and grit both damage the wear layer.
Metal fixtures and stainless. Work with the grain, use no chloride bleach, and keep abrasives away from brushed finishes.
Solvents: Use the Least Aggressive One That Works
Start with the gentlest option and escalate only if you must: warm soapy water, then a citrus-based cleaner, then mineral spirits, and only then anything stronger.
Test every solvent in a hidden area and wait a few minutes before deciding it is safe. Many solvents look fine on contact and then dull or soften a finish minutes later.
Never combine products. Bleach mixed with ammonia, with any acid, or with alcohol produces toxic gas, and glass cleaners and paint products are common sources of those. Use one product, ventilate the room, wear gloves, and follow the label. If a stripper is required, that is usually a sign the job belongs to a refinisher.

Why Overspray Happens and How to Avoid It Next Time
Overspray is a masking failure, not a painting failure. Spray equipment produces a fine mist that drifts, so anything within range that is not covered will collect a light coating -- often so light it is invisible until the light hits it sideways.
Mask with actual plastic and painter's tape sealed along its full length, not tacked at the corners. Cover glass entirely rather than trimming close to the edge. Turn off the heating and cooling system while spraying so air movement does not carry mist into other rooms.

Does dried latex paint come off glass?
Usually yes. Latex stays somewhat water-permeable for a long time, so soaking it with hot soapy water for several minutes will soften it enough to lift with a wet razor blade held at a shallow angle. Very old, fully cured latex takes longer to soften but generally still releases.
Will a razor blade scratch my windows?
Not if the glass is plain and you keep both the blade and the glass wet, work in one direction, and replace the blade at the first sign of a nick. It will scratch if used dry, used at a steep angle, or used on coated, tempered-with-coating, tinted, or plastic glazing. When in doubt about the glass type, skip the blade.
