Why prep the room at all
Carpet under furniture is the least-worn carpet in the house. When furniture comes back to a slightly different spot after a clean, the old footprint shows -- not because of dirt, but because the surrounding pile is cleaner and the sheltered patch never wore.
Moving pieces out of the room means the whole floor gets cleaned to one standard, dries at one rate, and grooms in one direction. It also removes the two biggest hazards on a cleaning day: wet wood legs and wet metal glides sitting on damp pile.
Before you start, it helps to know whether you have to move furniture at all. Many rooms only need the light pieces cleared.
What should you move before carpet cleaning?
Move what one person can carry safely: chairs, ottomans, side tables, lamps, floor plants, magazine racks, kids' toys, pet bowls, trash cans, and anything on a low shelf that could tip. Empty the room of small items entirely, then decide about the medium pieces. Leave beds, large sectionals, pianos, gun safes, and wall-anchored units in place.
The night-before checklist

How to slide furniture without wrecking it
Lift and slide, never drag. Dragging puts all the load on the legs and joints, and on carpet it also pushes the pile into a ridge you will be grooming out later.
- Use furniture sliders under each leg or corner. Hard plastic sliders are for carpet; felt sliders are for hard floors.
- Push from the mass, not the top. Push low, near the center of gravity, so the piece slides instead of tipping.
- Two people on anything above roughly fifty pounds. One steers, one pushes, and both agree on the route first.
- Take doors and drawers out of tall pieces where they lift free. It cuts weight and stops swinging.
- Watch the tip point on tall narrow pieces such as bookshelves and armoires. Walk them empty and slow.
- Protect the doorway. Doorframes are what actually gets damaged, not the furniture.
Older wooden furniture with glued mortise joints is the most fragile category. If it wobbles when you rock it gently, carry it or leave it.
What should stay put
Some things are safer left alone even if you could technically move them.
- Beds, especially platform and adjustable frames. Most crews clean around them.
- Large televisions and their stands. The screen is the risk, not the weight.
- Pianos, organs, and gun safes. These are specialty moves.
- Waterbeds and aquariums. Never.

It doubles the elapsed time and it is worth it in a bedroom or a studio apartment. The critical rule is that the first half must be dry -- not damp -- before furniture lands on it, or the legs will mark the pile they are standing on.
Putting furniture back
Do not rush this part. Wood finish, metal glides, and wicker all release color into damp carpet, and the stain that results is usually permanent.
