TL;DR
Silicone holds a thin oil film that lukewarm water does not remove, which is why a spatula can come out of the sink feeling tacky. Wash silicone in water as hot as you can handle with plenty of detergent, and use a baking soda paste for anything left. On two-piece spatulas, the seam where the head meets the handle is where old food hides.
Why silicone feels greasy after washing
Silicone is not porous in the way wood is, but its surface has a low energy that oil clings to readily. A thin fat film survives a normal wash and leaves the tacky feel people describe.
Temperature is the main lever. Fat softens and releases at higher temperatures, and detergent carries it away only once it is mobile. Cool water plus a quick pass leaves most of it in place.
Time is the second lever. Detergent needs contact, not just presence. A ten to fifteen minute soak in hot soapy water does more than aggressive scrubbing in tepid water.
The same behavior shows up on silicone bakeware, which is why how to clean silicone baking mats covers nearly the same method.
How do you get grease off a silicone spatula?
Soak it in water as hot as you can safely handle with a generous amount of dish soap for ten to fifteen minutes, then scrub with a brush rather than a sponge. For anything left, rub a paste of baking soda and water over the surface, let it sit briefly, and rinse hot.
Never use an abrasive pad on silicone
A green scouring pad or steel wool cuts the silicone surface. That does three bad things: it creates a rougher surface that holds more oil, it can shed small silicone fragments into food, and it makes staining set faster.
Use a nylon dish brush, a soft brush, or your hands with a cloth. Baking soda is a mild abrasive and is safe here; scouring powders and metal pads are not.
If a silicone spatula is already scored, torn, or peeling at the edge, it should be replaced rather than restored. A damaged food-contact surface cannot be cleaned to a reliable standard. Source: FDA Food Code guidance on cleanable food-contact surfaces.
The seam on two-piece spatulas
Many spatulas are a silicone head pressed onto a separate handle. That joint is a crevice, and batter, sauce, and oil work into it.
If the head pulls off -- many do -- remove it, wash both parts, dry them, and reassemble only when dry. Water trapped inside a handle socket is where odor and mold spots begin.
If the head does not come off, brush hard along the seam under hot running water from both faces, then dry the spatula with the head up so water leaves the joint rather than sitting in it. The same hidden-joint problem drives how to clean a whisk and how to clean kitchen tongs, and it is a running theme in our guide to cleaning kitchen tools without damaging them.
One-piece silicone spatulas avoid this entirely, which is a good reason to prefer them.
Staining and odor in silicone
Tomato, turmeric, chili, and curry stain silicone, and the staining is largely permanent. Washing immediately keeps it lighter, since pigment sets as it dries.
A baking soda paste lifts some of it. Extended sun exposure fades some staining over days. Neither is guaranteed, and neither is necessary -- staining is cosmetic and does not mean the tool is dirty.
Odor is different. Silicone can pick up smells from strongly flavored food, and that usually means residual oil rather than the silicone itself. A very hot wash with plenty of detergent, followed by a baking soda paste and a thorough rinse, resolves most of it. Some people bake silicone tools briefly in a low oven to drive off odor; if you do, stay well under the manufacturer's stated temperature limit and never leave it unattended.
Do not soak silicone in bleach. Chloride does nothing useful here, and mixing bleach with any other cleaner is genuinely dangerous.
Metal spatulas: a different set of rules
Stainless turners and offset spatulas. Hot soapy water and a brush. Pay attention to the slots on a slotted turner, where fat collects on the underside edges, and to any rivet on the handle. Avoid chlorine bleach, which pits stainless steel, and steel wool, which leaves iron particles that rust in place.
Fish spatulas. The flexible thin blade has a beveled edge that is sharper than people expect. Brush along the slots rather than sliding a cloth across the edge.
Coated or nonstick-safe metal. Do not use abrasives; the coating is what keeps it from scratching pans.
Carbon steel or unplated. Dry immediately and thoroughly. These rust quickly, and a rusted blade leaves marks on food.
Dishwasher and drying
Most silicone and stainless spatulas are dishwasher safe. The machine works well on flat surfaces and poorly on a seam, so brush a two-piece spatula's joint by hand first.
Wooden-handled spatulas stay out of the dishwasher entirely -- wood swells, cracks, and loosens at the ferrule with repeated cycles.
Dry everything before it goes in a drawer. Stand spatulas head-up in a crock or lay them on a rack for fifteen to twenty minutes. A drawer full of damp utensils is how a smell develops in a kitchen that otherwise looks clean.

FAQ
Why do silicone spatulas feel greasy after washing?
Silicone's surface holds a thin fat film that cool water will not release. Wash in water as hot as you can safely handle with plenty of dish soap, and let it soak ten to fifteen minutes so the detergent has contact time. Scrub with a brush rather than a sponge.
How do you deep clean a silicone spatula?
Soak it in very hot soapy water for ten to fifteen minutes, scrub with a nylon brush, then rub a paste of baking soda and water over the surface, let it sit briefly, and rinse hot. Never use a scouring pad or steel wool, which cut the silicone surface permanently.
Can silicone spatulas go in the dishwasher?
Yes, most are dishwasher safe. The machine handles flat surfaces well but not the seam on a two-piece spatula, so brush that joint by hand first. Spatulas with wooden handles should be hand washed, since heat and moisture crack wood and loosen the handle.
How do you get stains out of a silicone spatula?
Wash it immediately after use, since pigment from tomato, turmeric, and curry sets as it dries. A baking soda paste lifts some staining and sun exposure fades some over days, but much of it is permanent. Staining is cosmetic and does not mean the spatula is unclean.
Why does my spatula smell even after washing?
Usually residual oil holding the odor, and often it is trapped in the seam where a silicone head meets its handle. Pull the head off if it detaches, wash both parts, and dry fully. Otherwise brush hard along the joint under hot water with plenty of detergent.
When should a spatula be replaced?
When silicone is torn, scored, or peeling at the edge, when a coated metal spatula's coating is flaking, or when a carbon steel blade is pitted with rust. A damaged food-contact surface cannot be cleaned to a reliable standard, and spatulas are inexpensive to replace.
