Rinsing while the cone is still warm matters. Coffee oil is much easier to move before it cools and sets on ceramic.

Fill the server with hot water, add two tablespoons of baking soda, drop the cone in if it fits, and let it stand for fifteen to thirty minutes. Scrub with a soft sponge or bottle brush, then rinse well. Repeat rather than switching to an abrasive.

A dedicated coffee equipment cleaner is faster on a badly stained server. Rinse thoroughly, since those cleaners are alkaline and leave a soapy taste in the next brew.

Do not use scouring powder on glass or glazed ceramic. Fine scratches hold future stains, so the second clean is always harder than the first.

Cleaning a Metal Pour Over Filter

Reusable metal cones and mesh baskets clog with oil and coffee fines, which slows the flow and mutes the flavor. Rinse from the outside in so debris is pushed off the mesh rather than through it, then soak weekly in hot water with dish soap and brush both sides with a soft brush.

Hold the mesh to a light after cleaning. Even brightness means it is clear; patchy dark areas mean another soak.

Never use chlorine bleach on a stainless mesh filter. Chloride pits stainless steel and leaves permanent rust freckles that will not polish out.

Fill it halfway with equal parts white vinegar and water, bring it to a boil, let it stand off the heat for twenty to thirty minutes, then pour it out and rinse several times. Boil and discard one full kettle of plain water before brewing.

What About an Electric Gooseneck Kettle?

Electric models add one absolute rule: the powered base never gets wet. Descale the jug exactly as above, but keep water off the base and off the contact ring on the underside of the jug, and dry both before setting the kettle down.
