How to Clean Cloudy Glass Shower Doors Without Scratching.

How to clean cloudy glass shower doors safely: the test that tells film from permanent etching, which acids work, when polishing is the only fix, and how to keep it clear.

TL;DR

Cloudy shower glass is either removable film or permanent etching, and one simple wet test tells you which. Film comes off with a mild acid and a detergent in about 20 minutes. Etching is corrosion in the glass itself and only polishing, coating, or replacement addresses it.

First, Find Out What You Are Looking At

Before you buy anything, run this test. Wet the glass with plain water and look at it from an angle.

  • The cloudiness disappears while wet and returns as it dries. That is film. Mineral deposits and soap scum sitting on top of the glass. Fully removable.
  • The cloudiness stays visible even when the glass is soaking wet. That is etching. The hard water has corroded the silica in the glass surface. No cleaner removes it, because there is nothing sitting on top to remove.

Most cloudy doors are film, or film over light etching. People spend years scrubbing etched glass with harsher and harsher products and conclude they are bad at cleaning. They are not. They are trying to wash away damage.

Why Glass Clouds in the First Place

Two things build on shower glass at once. Hard water minerals deposit whenever a droplet evaporates instead of running off. Soap reacts with those same minerals to form a waxy gray film. The two layer together, which is why single-product approaches only half work. An acid alone loosens the mineral and leaves the greasy part. A degreaser alone cuts the soap and leaves the chalk.

Over years, deposits also hold moisture against the glass and slowly leach it, which is the mechanism behind true etching. Source: glass industry surface care guidance

How to Remove the Film

Work on a dry door so the product does not immediately run off.

  1. Ventilate. Open the window, run the exhaust fan, leave the door open.
  2. Apply a mild acid. White vinegar warmed slightly, or a citric acid solution, sprayed to full coverage. A little dish soap in the mix helps it cling and attacks the soap half of the film.
  3. Let it dwell 15 to 20 minutes. Re-wet if it starts drying. Dwell time is doing the work.
  4. Agitate with a non-scratch pad. White nylon pad or a melamine sponge used lightly. Never steel wool, never a scouring powder, never a green heavy-duty pad.
  5. Rinse thoroughly, then squeegee and dry. Any residue left behind becomes the base layer for the next round of buildup.

Stubborn corners near the frame usually need a second application and a soft detail brush. This is the same chemistry described in removing hard water stains, and the soap portion is covered in more detail in how soap scum forms and comes off.

Two safety rules that matter here

Never combine an acid with chlorine bleach. Vinegar plus bleach, or a descaler plus a bleach-based bathroom spray, releases chlorine gas, and a shower stall is exactly the small enclosed space where that becomes dangerous. Never mix bleach with an ammonia-based glass cleaner either. Rinse the surface completely before switching products.

What About Etched Glass?

If the wet test says etching, you have three honest options.

Polish it. A cerium oxide glass polishing compound with a felt or foam wheel on a low-speed drill can reduce light etching. It is slow, it must stay wet, and pressing too hard or letting it dry can create heat distortion. Practice on a low corner first.

Coat it. A silica or fluoropolymer glass sealant will not remove etching, but it fills and hides some of it while making future cleaning far easier. Expect to reapply every six to twelve months.

Replace it. Deep etching across a whole panel is generally not worth the labor of polishing. Many people replace the panel and immediately apply a protective coating.

There is no product that dissolves etching. Anything marketed that way is either removing film that was still present or is an abrasive that will scratch.

Does the Squeegee Habit Actually Work?

Yes, and it outperforms every product on this page. A squeegee removes the water before it can evaporate, so no minerals get left behind and soap has no film to build on. Thirty seconds after each shower prevents buildup that would otherwise take an hour to remove later.

Hang the squeegee inside the shower. A squeegee stored under the sink gets used twice. The full case for the habit is in whether a squeegee habit is worth it.

Watch the Surround, Not Just the Glass

The acid that cleans your glass can ruin what is next to it.

Surround material Acid contact
Ceramic or porcelain tile Fine
Cultured marble or acrylic panels Brief only, rinse fast
Natural stone (marble, travertine, limestone) Never -- permanent etching
Metal frame with a coated finish Brief only, no abrasives
Grout Brief only; repeated acid erodes cement grout

Stone showers are the big trap. Vinegar and commercial descalers etch calcite-based stone on contact, and the damage is permanent. If any part of your shower is real stone, work with a pH-neutral cleaner and accept slower progress, as explained in vinegar and natural stone.

While you are down there, the bottom channel usually holds more buildup than the glass does. See the door track that traps gunk.

Keeping It Clear

  • Squeegee after every shower.
  • Run the exhaust fan during and for 20 minutes after.
  • Wipe the glass with a damp cloth and dish soap weekly.
  • Do a mild acid pass monthly in hard water homes.

FAQ

How do I know if my shower glass is etched or just dirty?

Wet the glass with plain water. If the cloudiness vanishes while wet and reappears as it dries, it is removable film. If the cloudiness is still visible while the glass is soaking wet, the surface itself is etched and no cleaner will remove it.

What is the best thing to clean cloudy shower glass with?

A mild acid plus a detergent. White vinegar or a citric acid solution with a little dish soap covers both the mineral deposits and the soap film. Let it dwell 15 to 20 minutes, agitate with a non-scratch pad, then rinse and dry completely.

Can I use a razor blade on shower glass?

It is risky and usually unnecessary. A blade can scratch tempered glass, and any scratch becomes a permanent line that traps more soil. Longer dwell time with an acid removes the same deposits without the risk. If you must, keep the blade wet and flat.

Does a magic eraser scratch shower doors?

A melamine sponge is a fine abrasive, so used dry or with pressure it can dull glass and strip coated frames. Used wet and lightly on glass it is generally safe. Keep it off matte metal finishes and off any glass that already has a protective coating.

Will vinegar hurt my shower tile or grout?

Ceramic and porcelain tile tolerate vinegar. Cement grout does not tolerate it repeatedly, since acid slowly erodes the binder. Natural stone tile is damaged permanently by any acid. Rinse thoroughly and keep acid off stone entirely.

How often should I deep clean shower glass?

If you squeegee daily, a mild acid pass every one to two months is usually enough. Without a squeegee habit, plan on every two to three weeks in hard water homes. The interval is set by how much water is left to dry on the glass, not by how often you shower.
