Pumps differ more than people expect. Some tubing never contacts milk and is never washed. Some closed-system parts must not be submerged. Some valve membranes are replaced on a schedule rather than deep cleaned.

Read your specific manual before you build a routine. Most manufacturers publish it online.

If you use a rented or shared hospital-grade pump, it has its own instructions and its own kit rules. Follow those.

Personal pumps are single-user devices. Sharing a personal pump or using someone else's used kit is not a cleaning question, and the manufacturer's guidance on that is worth reading.

How often should breast pump parts be washed?

Wash every part that contacts milk after every single use, including flanges, valves, membranes, connectors, and bottles or collection containers. Rinse them under cool running water first, then wash in hot soapy water in a dedicated basin, rinse under fresh running water, and air dry on a clean rack.

Cool water first, because hot water sets milk protein onto the plastic.

Do not let parts sit in the refrigerator between sessions unless your manufacturer or your clinician specifically tells you that is acceptable for your situation. Guidance on this varies and it is worth asking rather than assuming.

Wash your hands before handling any part. That is part of the procedure, not an extra.

The basin rule

Use a wash basin reserved for infant feeding items rather than washing directly in the kitchen sink. Sinks and drains hold bacteria that can recontaminate parts you just cleaned.

Use a brush kept only for pump parts and bottles, plus a narrow brush for small channels. Do not use the sponge that cleans pans.

Rinse the washed parts under fresh running water, not in the basin water.

Empty, rinse, and air dry the basin and the brushes after each use. A basin sitting wet with residue in it is worse than no basin.

Washing each type of part

Flanges: wash the whole surface with hot soapy water, paying attention to the tunnel and the rim where the flange meets the connector.

Valves and membranes: these are the delicate ones. Wash them by hand with gentle pressure and let soapy water run over them. Do not scrub a thin membrane with a brush, do not stretch it, and do not twist it, because a torn membrane ruins suction and creates a small piece that could be swallowed.

Connectors and backflow protectors: take every joint apart. Milk collects at the seams, and these have several.

What about the tubing?

On most closed-system pumps, tubing never touches milk and does not need washing. On some pumps it does. The manual decides, and following the wrong rule causes problems either way.

If you see milk in the tubing on a closed-system pump, stop and check the manual, because that usually means a backflow protector or membrane has failed.

If you see moisture or condensation in the tubing, disconnect it from the parts, attach it to the pump, and run the pump for a few minutes to blow air through until it is dry. Hang the tubing to dry rather than coiling it damp.

If tubing has visible mold inside, replace it. You cannot clean the inside of a narrow tube reliably, and there is no safe way to verify you did.

Never try to dry tubing with a towel threaded through it or by heating it. Air movement is the method.

Sanitizing is a separate step

Sanitizing happens after washing, never instead of it, because it does not work on a surface with residue on it.

Methods your manufacturer may approve include boiling for the stated time, a steam bag or steam sterilizer, or a dishwasher cycle with a sanitize or heated dry setting. Not every part tolerates every method, and some parts are hand wash only.

Public health guidance generally treats daily sanitizing as most important for babies under a few months old, babies born prematurely, and babies with a weakened immune system. Beyond that, thorough washing is often considered sufficient.

That is a question for your clinician or your baby's pediatrician, not for an article. Cleaning and sanitizing reduce germs; they do not treat or prevent any condition.

Never use bleach, household disinfectants, or solvents on pump parts.

Drying without undoing the work

Air dry on a clean rack used only for feeding items, with parts separated so air reaches every surface. Do not towel dry, because towels transfer lint and bacteria.

Let parts dry completely before reassembling or storing. Assembled damp parts trap moisture where it cannot leave.

Store the dry kit in a clean, dry, covered container rather than loose in a bag. If you carry a kit to work, a sealed clean container plus a separate bag for used parts is the practical setup.

Wash the drying rack and the storage container regularly.

When to replace instead of clean

Replace membranes and valves on the schedule your manufacturer gives, and immediately if one is torn, stretched, cloudy, or no longer springs back. Weak suction is very often a worn membrane rather than a failing motor.

Replace flanges that are cracked or scratched, since scratches hold residue. Replace tubing with mold inside or with any crack.

Cleaning does not restore a worn part, and worn parts are the most common cause of a pump that seems to have stopped working well.

The daily rhythm
