Why soap is an absolute no
Soap and detergent are surfactants. They disrupt the fine membranes fish use to breathe through their gills, and it takes very little residue to do harm.
That rule extends to everything: buckets, siphons, scrapers, nets, and your hands. A bucket that once held soapy water can retain enough film to matter, so keep dedicated aquarium buckets and never wash them with detergent.

Why you never clean the whole tank at once
An established aquarium runs on a colony of beneficial bacteria living in the filter, the gravel, and on surfaces. Those bacteria convert fish waste ammonia into nitrite and then into less harmful nitrate.
Scrubbing everything, replacing all the water, and rinsing the gravel in tap water wipes out much of that colony. The tank then goes through a fresh cycle where ammonia spikes, and that is far more dangerous to fish than a little algae ever was.
Routine maintenance is a partial job on purpose. Change part of the water, clean part of the surfaces, and leave the biological system intact.
How do you clean aquarium glass?
Use an algae scraper or a magnet cleaner made for aquariums, working from the top down in overlapping strokes. Match the tool to the tank: a plastic blade for acrylic, which scratches easily, and a stiffer blade only on glass. Never use a household scouring pad.
Corners and the silicone seams need a gentler touch. Dragging a hard blade along a seam can cut the silicone, and a cut seam is a leak waiting to happen.
For the outside of the glass, use plain water on a cloth, or a cleaner labeled aquarium safe, sprayed onto the cloth rather than at the tank. Ammonia-based glass cleaners are a bad idea near an aquarium.
Vacuuming the gravel
A gravel vacuum is a wide siphon tube. Pushing it into the substrate lifts the gravel briefly, lets the lighter waste get pulled up the tube, and drops the heavier gravel back down.
- Start the siphon into a dedicated bucket set below the tank.
- Push the tube into the gravel and let it clear, then lift, move a few inches, and repeat.
- Cover a third to a half of the substrate per session rather than the whole floor, so you do not disturb too much of the bacterial colony at once.
- Watch the bucket and stop when you have removed your target volume of water.
- Refill with dechlorinated water at a temperature close to the tank's.
Work around plant roots gently, and keep the siphon clear of any fish that come to investigate.
How often should you clean an aquarium?
Most freshwater tanks do well with a partial water change of ten to twenty-five percent every one to two weeks, with gravel vacuuming and glass scraping done at the same time. Heavily stocked tanks need more frequent changes. Test your water rather than guessing.
Tap water, chlorine, and temperature
Tap water in most municipal systems contains chlorine or chloramine to keep it safe for people. Both are harmful to fish and to the beneficial bacteria in a tank.
Treat replacement water with a dechlorinator made for aquariums, following the dose on the label. Chloramine in particular does not simply evaporate out of a standing bucket the way chlorine can.
Match the temperature reasonably closely to the tank before adding water. A large swing stresses fish, and stress is where most tank problems begin.
Algae: what it means and what to do
Algae is not a hygiene failure. It grows where there is light and nutrients, and it tells you something about the balance in the tank.
Common contributors are too many hours of light, direct sunlight on the tank, overfeeding, and infrequent water changes. Adjusting those does more than scrubbing does.
Scrape what you can see, keep up with water changes, cut feeding back to what the fish finish in a couple of minutes, and reduce the light period. Things that must never go in a tank
Beyond soap, keep out all household cleaners, bleach, and scented products of any kind.
Never mix bleach with ammonia or with any acid. This matters in a fish room specifically, because aquarium water and waste are an ammonia source, so bleach poured into a bucket or sink holding tank water can produce the reaction with no second product involved.
Keep essential oils out of any room with a tank. They are toxic to many animals and can enter the water through the surface.
If any household chemical does enter a tank, act immediately: move the fish to safe water if you can, do a large water change, and contact an aquatic veterinarian or an experienced fish specialist.
