TL;DR
An air fryer basket is nonstick, so the entire job is a soak plus a soft sponge. Fifteen minutes in hot soapy water removes almost everything, and the sticky brown film that resists is polymerized cooking oil rather than burnt food. Never use steel wool, scouring powder, metal utensils, or aerosol cooking spray, and never put the motor housing anywhere near water.
Why the basket goes sticky and brown
The film that builds on the outside of the basket and around the rim is not dirt. It is cooking oil that has been heated repeatedly until it polymerized into a hard varnish, which is the same process described in why kitchen grease is so stubborn.
That is why a quick wipe never touches it and why scrubbing hard feels like the only option. It is not. Heat and dwell time break it down, and the coating survives.
The routine after every use
Unplug the unit and let everything cool. Hot nonstick dropped into cold water can warp, and a hot basket handle is easy to misjudge.
- Pull the basket and the crisper plate out and separate them if they detach.
- Fill the sink with hot water and a squeeze of degreasing dish soap.
- Soak both pieces ten to twenty minutes.
- Wipe with a soft sponge or a nylon brush with soft bristles. Do not use the green scouring side.
- Pay attention to the underside of the crisper plate and the basket corners, where drippings collect.
- Rinse thoroughly and dry completely before reassembling.
Do that consistently and the sticky varnish never gets a chance to form.
What removes stuck on residue?
A baking soda paste, applied gently. Mix baking soda with a little water to a thick consistency, spread it over the stubborn area, and leave it fifteen to thirty minutes so it can soften the deposit. Wipe it away with a soft sponge and light pressure rather than scrubbing.
For a heavy case, soak longer in hotter water instead of applying more force. If the deposit has hardened into a lacquer around the rim, the approach that works on stripping burnt baking sheets applies, minus the abrasive steps, since a sheet pan can take treatment a coated basket cannot.
What never touches an air fryer basket
| Never use | Why |
|---|---|
| Steel wool or metal scrubbers | Cuts straight through the coating |
| Scouring powder | Abrades and dulls the surface |
| Metal utensils or knives | Gouges that spread |
| Oven cleaner | Attacks the coating and the aluminum |
| Aerosol cooking spray | Leaves a residue that bonds and degrades coating |
| The dishwasher, unless labeled safe | Detergent shortens coating life |
| Dry heating an empty unit | Overheats the coating |
That last row deserves its own note. Overheated nonstick coatings can release fumes, and pet birds are extremely sensitive to them. Keep birds well away from any cooking appliance, do not run an air fryer empty at high heat, and use liquid oil brushed on food instead of propellant sprays.

Do not forget the heating element
The coil in the top of the unit collects splatter, and that splatter is what makes an air fryer smoke on the next run.
Unplug the unit, let it cool, then turn it upside down or on its side so you can see the element. Wipe it with a damp cloth and a drop of dish soap, then a plain damp cloth, then let it dry fully. Never spray anything into the unit and never submerge the housing, which contains the fan and the electronics.
Wipe the interior cavity walls the same way while it is turned over, since grease there also smokes.
Is the dishwasher safe for the basket?
Only if the manual says so. Many baskets are labeled dishwasher safe, and even then hand washing extends coating life, because dishwasher detergent is strongly alkaline and the drying cycle runs hot.
The tradeoff is the same one that applies across all coated cookware, laid out in cleaning nonstick pans without ruining the coating. If the coating is already flaking or chipping, stop using the basket. Damaged nonstick does not clean back to new, and the fix is a replacement basket rather than harder scrubbing. The rest of the counter lineup is covered in the small appliance cleaning guide and the wider kitchen cleaning guide.
FAQ
How do I get sticky brown residue off an air fryer basket?
Soak it in hot water with degreasing dish soap for fifteen to twenty minutes, then wipe with a soft sponge. For residue that stays, spread a baking soda and water paste over it, wait fifteen to thirty minutes, and wipe gently. Never use abrasive pads or scouring powder.
Can an air fryer basket go in the dishwasher?
Check the manual, because many are labeled dishwasher safe and many are not. Even when it is allowed, hand washing extends the life of the nonstick coating, since dishwasher detergent is strongly alkaline and the heated dry cycle is hard on coatings.
Why does my air fryer smoke?
Usually because grease has collected on the heating element or the cavity walls, or because high fat food is dripping into the drawer. Unplug the unit, let it cool, turn it over, and wipe the element with a damp soapy cloth, then a clean one, and dry it fully.
Is a scratched air fryer basket still safe to use?
Once the coating is flaking or chipping, replace the basket rather than keep using it. Flakes can end up in food and the exposed metal underneath sticks badly. Replacement baskets are widely available for most models and cost far less than a new unit.
Can I use vinegar to clean an air fryer?
Diluted vinegar is fine for wiping the exterior and the cavity, but it does little against polymerized oil, which needs a surfactant and heat instead. Never combine vinegar with any chlorine bleach product, and never let liquid run into the vents or the housing.
How often should an air fryer be cleaned?
Wash the basket and crisper plate after every use, and wipe the heating element and interior every few weeks or whenever the unit starts to smoke. Regular washing takes two minutes; letting residue build turns it into a thirty minute soak.
