TL;DR
The brown ring at the top of each cup is batter that overflowed and baked directly onto the pan, and it needs soaking rather than scrubbing -- fill the whole pan with hot soapy water so every cup is submerged, leave it thirty to sixty minutes, then work a soft brush around each rim. Abrasive pads ruin nonstick coatings and scratch aluminum.
Why muffin tins are worse than sheet pans
Three things make a muffin tin awkward.
The cups are deep and curved. A sponge cannot get to the bottom curve, and a flat pad cannot follow the wall.
The rim between cups is where the damage happens. Batter rises, overflows, and bakes onto the flat top surface, where it gets full oven heat with nothing to protect it. That is the brown ring.
Every cup is a separate job. Twelve small enclosed spaces take longer than one open pan.
The upside is that the residue is the same substance as on any pan -- polymerized fat and sugar -- so the same principles apply: heat, alkalinity, time, then the softest tool that works. That logic is set out in the guide to cleaning kitchen tools without damaging them.
How do you clean a muffin tin?
Fill the pan with hot water and degreasing dish soap so every cup is submerged, and set it in a sink or a larger pan so the top surface is covered too. Soak thirty to sixty minutes, then work a soft nylon brush around each cup and along the rims, rinse with hot water, and dry completely.
The routine
1. Soak the whole pan, not just the cups. Rest the tin in a sink of hot soapy water so the top surface between the cups is submerged as well. That surface holds the worst of the baked residue.
2. Give it thirty to sixty minutes. Longer for heavy buildup. Refresh with hot water if it cools before anything has softened.
3. Use a round brush in each cup. A small bottle brush or a round nylon dish brush follows the curve of the cup. A flat sponge never touches the wall properly.
4. Work the rims with a toothbrush. The baked ring sits right at the lip. A small brush plus the softened residue does it without abrasives.
5. Add a baking soda paste for what remains. Spread it on the stubborn rings, leave it thirty minutes, and brush again. Keep contact short on bare aluminum, which alkaline products darken.
6. Rinse with hot water and dry fully. Turn the tin upside down on a towel, then leave it upright to finish. Water trapped in the cups leads to spotting and, on any exposed steel, rust.
Nonstick, aluminum, and steel tins
Nonstick tins need soft tools only. No scouring powder, no metal, no steel wool, no melamine foam. A scratched coating means batter sticks in the scratch permanently, and it does not come back.
Bare aluminum tins scratch easily and darken when alkaline products sit on them. Keep baking soda contact short and use a nylon brush rather than a pad.
Anodized aluminum should be treated like nonstick. The anodized layer is a coating and abrasives wear it off.
Stainless and tinned steel tolerate more scrubbing with nylon, but tinned steel rusts once the coating is worn, so it needs the same fast, thorough drying as tinplate bakeware -- the same issue described in how to clean a wire cooling rack.
Can muffin tins go in the dishwasher?
Many are labeled dishwasher safe, but there are real reasons to hand wash.
Dishwasher detergent is harsh on nonstick coatings and shortens their life noticeably. It also discolors bare aluminum, turning it dull grey.
And spray arms struggle to reach the bottom of a deep cup, so tins often come out with the ring residue still in place, now baked drier by the heated dry cycle.
Check the underside marking. If a tin is dishwasher safe and you use the machine anyway, a hot soak beforehand still does most of the work.
Removing badly baked on rings
If a ring survives the soak and the brush, do not escalate to steel wool.
Instead, lay a cloth or paper towel soaked in hot soapy water directly over the rings and leave it for an hour. Keeping the residue continuously wet is what breaks it down, and a covering stops it drying out.
Then apply a baking soda paste, leave it thirty minutes, and brush again. Two or three rounds of this handles almost anything.
A pan that still has hard flaking residue after several rounds, or a nonstick tin whose coating is peeling, is at the end of its life. Deep fluted pans have the same problem in an even harder shape, covered in how to clean a bundt pan.
Bleach has no role here. It does not touch polymerized fat, and it must never be combined with ammonia, with vinegar or any other acid, or with rubbing alcohol, because each combination releases a toxic gas.
Preventing the ring in the first place
Use liners. Paper or silicone liners mean the inside of the cup barely gets dirty. The rim still needs attention.
Do not overfill. Batter filled to about two thirds rises without spilling. Overflow is what creates the ring.
Wipe up spills before baking. Batter dripped on the rim during filling bakes on hardest of all. A damp cloth takes two seconds.
Grease with brushed oil or softened butter, not aerosol spray. Spray residue polymerizes into a film that is notably harder to remove than plain fat.
Soak while still warm. Fill the cups with hot soapy water as soon as the muffins come out, and most of the job disappears.
Sheet pans have the same story and the same fixes, described in how to remove carbon buildup from baking sheets.
Cleaning bakeware reduces residue and stale flavor carryover. It is not a food safety program on its own.

FAQ
How do you get baked on batter off a muffin tin?
Soak the whole pan in hot soapy water so both the cups and the top surface are submerged, for thirty to sixty minutes. Then work a small round brush inside each cup and a toothbrush around the rims. Add a baking soda paste for anything that remains and repeat.
Can muffin tins go in the dishwasher?
Many are labeled dishwasher safe, but detergent shortens the life of nonstick coatings and dulls bare aluminum, and spray arms often fail to reach the bottom of a deep cup. Hand washing after a hot soak gives a better result and preserves the finish.
What is the brown ring at the top of each muffin cup?
Batter that overflowed and baked directly onto the flat surface of the pan, where it received full oven heat with nothing between it and the metal. It is polymerized sugar and fat, which is why soap alone does nothing and soaking is the effective approach.
Can you use an abrasive pad on a muffin tin?
Not on nonstick or anodized aluminum, where abrasives destroy the coating permanently, and not really on bare aluminum, which scratches. Use a soft nylon brush and let hot soaking do the work. Stainless steel tins tolerate firmer nylon scrubbing.
How do you stop muffins sticking and messing up the pan?
Use paper or silicone liners, fill cups to about two thirds so batter does not overflow, and wipe any drips off the rim before the pan goes in the oven. Grease with brushed oil or softened butter rather than aerosol spray, which leaves a harder residue.
Should you wash a muffin tin while it is still hot?
Not while it is hot, since sudden temperature change can warp thin pans. Let it cool for a few minutes, then fill the cups with hot soapy water while the tin is still warm. Residue that never fully cools and hardens comes off far more easily.
Bakeware responds to soaking. The kitchen after a baking day is the part that takes time. If you would rather hand that off, get a quote or read more about house cleaning services.
