Can clogged gutters really cause foundation problems?

The mechanism, step by step
Water overflows at the wall. Debris blocks the trough, water backs up and spills over the front and back edges. The back edge is worse, because that water runs down behind the gutter onto the fascia and the wall.
The backfill soil saturates. The ground next to a foundation is not native soil. It is material put back after the foundation was poured, and it is looser and more absorbent than the undisturbed ground beyond it. Water finds it and stays.
Saturated soil pushes. Wet soil is heavier and, in clay soils, swells. That translates into lateral pressure against a basement or crawlspace wall that the wall was designed for only within limits.
Then it dries and shrinks. Clay in particular contracts as it dries, pulling away from the foundation and leaving a gap. Next rain, that gap becomes a direct channel straight down to the footing.
The cycle repeats. Expansion, contraction, and repeated wetting under one part of the house while another stays dry produces differential movement. Foundations tolerate uniform settlement far better than uneven settlement.
What it looks like from inside and out
Signs build slowly, which is why this problem runs for years before anyone connects it to the gutters.
Outside. A trench or splash line in the mulch below the gutter. Soil eroded away from the foundation wall. Peeling paint or a persistent damp line low on the siding. A downspout with no extension, discharging onto a splash block that is itself sunk into a hollow.
At the structure. Stair-step cracks in a block or brick foundation wall. Horizontal cracking in a poured wall, which indicates lateral pressure and is more serious. Doors and windows that stick seasonally, particularly on one side of the house.
Inside. Efflorescence, the white mineral bloom, on basement walls. A musty smell in the crawlspace. Water tracking in at the wall-floor joint after heavy rain. Cupped or lifting flooring near an exterior wall.
Any of these individually can have another cause. Several of them on the side of the house where the gutter overflows is a pattern worth acting on.
Fixing the drainage, not just the gutter
Clean gutters are necessary and not always sufficient. The full path matters.
Confirm the trough has fall toward the downspout. Standing water after a flush means the run is sagging or was hung level.
Extend every downspout. Discharge should land at least four to six feet from the foundation, further on clay soil or where the ground slopes toward the house. Extensions, roll-out sleeves, or buried lines all work.
Grade the soil away from the house. The ground should drop roughly six inches over the first ten feet. Beds that have been mulched year after year often end up higher than the surrounding grade, which sends water inward.
Do not mound mulch against the wall. It holds moisture at the exact spot you are trying to keep dry, and it can bridge the siding's clearance above grade.
Check buried drain lines. Downspouts tied into underground pipe fail invisibly when the line crushes or fills with roots. If a downspout backs up during rain and you cannot see the outlet running, that line needs attention.
