A high touch point program works when the list is short and consistent. What belongs on it, how often each tier is wiped, and the two-step order that matters.

What a touch point actually is

A high touch point is a surface that many different people contact with their hands during a normal day.

The definition does two useful things. It rules in objects that are small and easily overlooked -- door hardware, light switches, shared controls. And it rules out large surfaces that are cleaned for appearance rather than transfer, such as floors, walls, and windowsills. Nobody transfers anything meaningful through a floor in an office.

That second exclusion is where most of the wasted effort in touch point programs lives.

What surfaces are high touch points in an office?

Door handles and push plates, light switches, elevator buttons, handrails, shared equipment controls such as copiers and coffee machines, break room appliance handles, shared phones and keyboards, restroom fixtures and dispensers, and reception counters. The common factor is many different hands, not surface size.

Building the list

The right list is derived from the building rather than copied. A short walk with one question -- who touches this, and how many different people -- produces a better list than any template.

Group the results into three tiers rather than one flat list. Tiers are what make a program survivable under time pressure, because when the route runs short, the crew cuts the bottom tier rather than cutting randomly.

Short beats comprehensive

The strongest argument for a short list is behavioral rather than technical. A crew given twelve items on a defined route will complete twelve items. A crew given forty will complete some subset that varies by night, and nobody will know which subset.

If the list has to grow, the honest response is to add time to the route rather than items to a route that was already full. That is a budgeting conversation, not a performance one, and treating it as the latter is how touch point programs quietly stop happening.

The two-step order, applied to touch points

Touch points are small surfaces, which makes it tempting to treat them as a single quick wipe. That is exactly the shortcut that empties the program of value.

Clean first. Door hardware collects oils and residue from hands, and that film blocks disinfectant from reaching what is underneath. A cleaning pass removes it. The reasoning is developed in why cleaning comes before disinfecting.

Then disinfect and wait. The product needs to stay visibly wet for the time its label states. On small metal hardware in a moving-air corridor, that is harder than it sounds -- these surfaces dry fast. A touch point sprayed and immediately wiped has been cleaned, which is genuinely worth something. It has not been disinfected, and the program should not claim otherwise.

Cloth discipline on a touch point route

A touch point route moves a cloth across the whole building, which makes it the route where cross contamination is most likely.

The rules that matter: restroom touch points get a dedicated cloth that never leaves the restroom, break room and food-area touch points get their own, and general touch points get a third. Surfaces that need care with product choice

Touch points include some materials that limit what can be used on them.

Screens and displays. Coated panels are damaged by ammonia and by alcohol. Shared touchscreens should be cleaned per the device manufacturer's guidance, not with general-purpose cleaner.

Stainless steel. Chloride bleach pits stainless, so bleach products are a poor choice on stainless fixtures, handles, and appliance fronts. Clean with the grain.

Keyboards and shared electronics. Damp, never wet, and never sprayed directly. Excess liquid is the failure mode.

And the rule that applies everywhere: products are used one at a time. Never mix a bleach product with an ammonia-based cleaner, with any acid, or with rubbing alcohol, and never combine hydrogen peroxide and vinegar in one container.

What the program does not do

A touch point program reduces soil and reduces germs on the surfaces it treats, at the moment it treats them. Those surfaces are touched again minutes later. It does not sterilize anything, it does not create a lasting barrier, and it does not treat, prevent, or cure illness. Health questions belong with a doctor.

What it does do is remove a genuine transfer route and keep shared surfaces visibly maintained, which is a reasonable thing to buy without overclaiming.

Touch points are small and easy to skip without anyone noticing, which puts them in the same category as periodic work: they need verification or they drift.

Two lightweight approaches work. Sample a few tier-one items during any inspection walk rather than only checking visible surfaces. And rotate a photographed item each service, which takes seconds and creates a record.
