Entry Matting System Design for Commercial Carpet Programs.

Most building soil arrives on shoes, and most matting runs are far too short to stop it. Here is how to size a three-stage walk-off system and service it.

Roughly 80 percent of the soil in commercial carpet walks in through the door, and a matting run needs to be long enough that a person takes six to eight steps on it -- typically ten to fifteen feet, and more at a busy street entrance. Read that as a budget statement rather than a fact. Four fifths of your cleaning cost is driven by a strip of floor at each entrance, which means the entrance is where the highest-return spending is. Almost every facility under-invests there and over-invests in cleaning frequency downstream.

How Long Should a Matting Run Be?

Long enough for six to eight footfalls, which for most adults means ten to fifteen feet of continuous matting from the threshold inward. Twenty to twenty-five feet is appropriate at a heavy street-level entrance or where people arrive from an unpaved lot. Anything under six feet is decorative rather than functional.

The reason is mechanical. Each footfall transfers only a portion of what is on a shoe, so soil removal is a series of small subtractions. Cut the run short and you have cut off the subtractions before they finish.

The Three Stages and What Each One Does

A working system has three functional zones, and skipping any one of them shifts its job onto your carpet.

Stage one, outside the door: scraping. Coarse, open, rubber or heavy bristle matting, usually on a grate or a recessed well. Its job is to knock off gravel, mud, and heavy debris before anyone reaches the building. It must drain or allow debris to fall through, or it becomes a tray of grit that gets re-deposited.

Stage two, in the vestibule: scraping plus absorption. A dual-purpose mat with abrasive fiber and some absorbency. It takes the finer grit the outside stage missed and starts pulling moisture off the sole.

Stage three, inside the door: absorption and drying. Dense, absorbent fiber -- typically nylon or a nylon blend -- that pulls remaining moisture and fine soil from the shoe. This is the longest stage and the one most often omitted.

Where a building only has room for two stages, drop stage one and keep two and three. Moisture is the harder problem indoors, because wet shoes carry soil deeper into the carpet and wet carpet stays soiled.

Material Choices That Hold Up

Nylon face fiber is the standard for indoor stages. It is abrasion-resistant, it absorbs and releases water well, and it recovers from crushing better than the alternatives.

Solution dyed fiber resists color loss from cleaning chemicals and sunlight, which matters at a glass entrance.

Rubber or vinyl backing must be non-staining. Some cheap rubber backings plasticize onto vinyl and polished floors and leave a permanent yellow shadow, and that discoloration is not a cleaning failure -- it is chemical migration and it does not come out.

Beveled edges are a trip-safety requirement, not a nicety. Curling corners on a worn mat are a genuine hazard and one of the most common reasons a facility ends up removing matting it needed.

Recessed wells are the premium option at a main entrance. They eliminate the trip edge entirely, allow deeper and more effective matting, and give the entry a finished look. They are a construction decision rather than a purchasing one.

Sizing Beyond Length

Width matters as much as run length and is missed more often. The matting must be at least as wide as the full door opening plus the swing, because people walk around a narrow mat rather than along it. A mat that people step off is a mat that is not working.

Thickness is a trade-off. Deeper pile holds more soil between servicing but interferes with door clearance and with wheeled traffic. Check door swing before ordering anything thick.

And plan for the whole entry sequence, not just the main door. Loading doors, employee entrances, and any threshold from a dirty area into a clean one -- a shop bay, a kitchen, a warehouse -- need their own runs. Servicing: The Part That Decides Whether It Works

A matting system is a soil reservoir. Full reservoirs do not absorb, and a saturated mat redistributes soil onto shoes rather than removing it.

  • Vacuum daily on both sides in high-traffic buildings, and use several slow passes rather than one fast one.
  • Deep clean or launder on a schedule, monthly to quarterly depending on traffic and season.
  • Increase everything in wet weather. In a rainy season the mats are the whole defense, and a soaked mat is worse than no mat.
  • Rotate or replace when the pile crushes. A crushed mat has no capacity left regardless of how clean it looks.
  • Check backing and edges at every service for curling, hardening, and any staining under the mat.

Fitting Matting Into the Wider Program

Matting reduces the soil load, which reduces the frequency every downstream zone needs. That is the connection to make when justifying it.

In a program built on measured condition rather than the calendar, better matting shows up as slower decline in the audit scores for the lanes behind the entrance -- which means longer intervals between cleanings at the same appearance level.
