Which Stains Need an Oxidizer?
Oxidizers handle stains where the problem is color rather than material. Coffee, tea, red wine, fruit juice, colored drink mixes, and many food dyes fall here.
These are called tannin or dye stains, and no amount of detergent removes them because there is nothing to lift off -- the color has bonded with the fiber. An oxidizer breaks the chromophore, the part of the molecule that reflects visible color, so the stain stops being visible. The Fiber Limits That Matter Most
This is where people damage carpet.
Wool takes no oxidizer. Wool is a protein fiber, and oxygen bleach or hydrogen peroxide at working strength attacks it the same way it attacks a protein stain. It also cannot take high heat or high alkalinity. Wool stays in a pH range of roughly 5 to 8, and oxidizers are off the table entirely.
Enzymes on wool are risky too. Protease enzymes digest protein, and wool is protein. Enzyme products intended for pet cleanup can weaken wool fiber if left to dwell for hours. Wool-safe pet products exist and use different chemistry; use those instead.
Nylon holds acid dyes permanently. Red drink mix and food coloring bond to nylon dye sites in a way that neither class fully reverses. Those need a reducing agent, not an oxidizer, and that is generally a professional job.

Safety: The Combinations to Never Make

How to Test Before You Treat
Both classes can lift dye from carpet, especially older or unbranded product. Test in a closet or under furniture: apply a small amount, press a white towel into it, and look at the towel. Color transfer means stop.
