Two products with almost nothing in common

Enzyme drain maintainers contain bacterial cultures and enzymes that digest organic matter -- grease, hair, soap residue, and food particles. They work slowly, over hours, and they do nothing to a solid obstruction. Their purpose is to keep a working drain from becoming a slow one.

Caustic drain cleaners are usually sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide, sometimes with aluminum added to generate heat and gas. They dissolve grease by saponification and break down hair by attacking protein. They work in minutes and generate significant heat in the process.

Some products are acid-based instead, typically sulfuric acid, and these are the most aggressive consumer drain products sold.

Which drain cleaner should you use?

Neither, as a first response to a blocked drain -- start with mechanical clearing. Use an enzyme maintainer monthly to prevent slow drains, and reserve caustic products for a slow drain where mechanical methods have failed and the pipes are known to be modern.

What enzymes do well

Prevention. Used monthly, they keep the film that forms on pipe walls from thickening into a restriction.

Pipe safety. They do not damage pipes, seals, or septic systems, and are generally septic-safe.

Personal safety. No burns, no fumes, no violent reactions.

Their limits are equally clear. They do nothing to a full blockage. They work slowly, typically overnight. They are ineffective against hair mats, mineral scale, and anything inorganic. Hot water flushing right after application washes them away before they work. And they need repetition -- one dose is not a treatment.

What caustics do, and what they cost you

Speed. They can clear a slow drain in fifteen to thirty minutes.

Grease. They saponify fat effectively, which is their strongest use case in a kitchen line.

Availability. Every hardware store carries them.

The risks are substantial and worth listing plainly.

Chemical burns. Sodium hydroxide causes severe burns on skin and eyes. Splash-back when pouring is a common injury.

Heat. The reaction generates enough heat to soften or deform PVC, and to crack porcelain in rare cases.

Older pipes. Metal drain lines, particularly older galvanized or corroded pipe, are damaged by repeated caustic exposure.

Standing water. If the drain is fully blocked, the product sits in the trap or the sink rather than reaching the clog, leaving a caustic pool that someone then has to deal with.

Septic systems. Caustics kill the bacterial culture a septic tank depends on.

Plumber hazard. A plumber who opens a line containing an undissolved caustic product is exposed to it. Always tell them what went down the drain.

The mixing rule, which is the most important paragraph here

Never put a second drain product down a drain that already contains one. Never mix two drain cleaners, and never follow a caustic with an acid or the reverse.

Acid and caustic together react violently, generating heat and spatter that can eject boiling caustic liquid back out of the drain. This is one of the most serious accidents in household cleaning, and it happens because a first product did not work and someone escalated.

If a product has failed, do not add anything. Call a plumber and tell them exactly what is in the line.

Mechanical methods should come first

Before either chemistry, the physical options are safer, cheaper, and usually more effective.

Clean the stopper and strainer. In a bathroom sink, most of the problem is hair and soap wrapped around the pop-up assembly, a few inches down. Pull it and clean it.

A drain snake or hair tool. A thin plastic barbed strip pulls hair mats out directly. This is the single highest-return tool for a bathroom drain.

A plunger. Effective on sink and tub blockages when used correctly, which means sealing the overflow opening first.

Clean the trap. The P-trap under a sink unscrews. Put a bucket under it. Most kitchen sink clogs are right there.

Prevention beats both products

Strainers in every drain. Hair catchers in showers and tubs.

Never pour cooking grease down a drain. It solidifies in the line and is the foundation of most kitchen clogs. Pour it into a container and bin it.

Run cold water while a garbage disposal is operating, and for fifteen seconds after, so fats stay solid and travel out rather than coating the pipe.

Flush drains with hot water weekly, and use an enzyme maintainer monthly. Do the enzyme treatment last thing at night when no water will run for hours.

When it is a plumber's job

Call a plumber if more than one fixture is slow at once, if a drain backs up into another fixture, if there is sewage odor or backup, if a drain clogs repeatedly on a short cycle, or if the home has older metal drain lines.

Repeated clogging in the same drain usually means a partial obstruction, a venting problem, a sagging line, or root intrusion in the main. None of those is fixed by a bottle, and continuing to pour products into a line with a structural problem does damage without solving anything.

The verdict, with conditions

Use an enzyme maintainer if your drains work but slow gradually, you get odors, you have a septic system, or you want to stop the problem before it starts. Monthly, overnight, indefinitely.

Use a caustic product only if the drain is slow rather than fully blocked, mechanical methods have failed, the pipes are modern plastic, there is no septic system, and you can ventilate and wear eye protection. Follow the label exactly, and use it once.

Use mechanical clearing first in nearly every case. It is safer, cheaper, and more likely to work.
