How Dry Compound Cleaning Works

Dry compound is a moist, absorbent carrier -- usually a cellulose or corn-based granule soaked with a small amount of solvent, detergent, and water. It is spread onto the carpet, brushed into the pile with a counter-rotating machine, given a short dwell, and then vacuumed out.

The granule works like a sponge. Soil dissolves into the moisture inside it and stays there when the vacuum lifts the compound off the fiber. Nothing is rinsed, and nothing is left to crystallize later.

How Encapsulation Works

Encapsulation sprays a liquid polymer into the pile and agitates it in. As the carpet dries, the polymer hardens around each soil particle and turns it into a brittle crumb with no grip on the fiber. Vacuuming removes those crumbs over the following days.

That delay is the defining trait of the method. Encapsulation is not finished when the technician leaves; it is finished by the third or fourth vacuum pass. In buildings that vacuum daily, that is an advantage. In a home that vacuums once a week, it slows results down.

Which One Removes More Soil?

Encapsulation generally removes more soil over a full cycle, because the polymer keeps releasing soil into successive vacuum passes. Dry compound removes less overall but removes it immediately, since the carrier and the soil leave together in one vacuum step.

The comparison flips based on the vacuum. Dry compound needs a strong upright with a good brush roll to pull granules out of dense pile. Encapsulation needs consistent vacuuming afterward. The Honest Verdict

For most buildings and most homes, encapsulation is the better default. It costs about the same, it is gentler on the pile than pad-based methods, and it produces better results on cut pile as long as the vacuum schedule is real.

Choose dry compound when zero downtime is the actual requirement, when the fiber cannot tolerate added moisture, or when nobody is going to vacuum reliably for the next week. That is a narrow window, but inside it dry compound is the right answer and encapsulation is not.
