What an ionizer claims to do

An ionizer emits charged particles into the air. Those charges attach to airborne particles, which then either clump together and fall out of the air faster, or acquire a charge that makes them stick to nearby surfaces such as walls, curtains, and furniture.

Read that mechanism carefully, because it explains the central problem. Particles that stick to your walls have left the air. They have not left the room. They resettle on surfaces, they are re-suspended when someone walks past or dusts, and the visible result is often a dark film on the wall near the device.

Why agencies caution against ozone

Ozone is a strong oxidant. In outdoor air it is a regulated pollutant. Indoors, at concentrations low enough to be safe to breathe, it is not effective at removing most contaminants, and at concentrations high enough to affect contaminants it is harmful to breathe. Ozone also reacts with common indoor chemicals, including the terpenes in citrus and pine cleaning products and in many air fresheners, producing secondary compounds and ultrafine particles. So a device intended to clean the air can generate new material in a room that smells of citrus cleaner.

Devices marketed as ionizers, plasma units, or activated oxygen products are not all the same, and some produce measurably more ozone than others. If a product's documentation does not state its ozone emission, treat that silence as a reason to be cautious, particularly in a bedroom or a small closed room.

If anyone in the household has asthma, COPD, or another respiratory condition, ask their doctor before introducing any air treatment device. Nothing in a cleaning routine treats, prevents, or cures a condition.

What actually improves indoor air

Three measures carry the evidence, and none of them is exotic.

Source control is the most effective and the least glamorous. Fix moisture problems, vent cooking and bathing to the outdoors, keep shoes at the door, wash textiles, and reduce the number of scented and aerosol products in use. Removing a source beats treating its output every time.

Ventilation dilutes what remains. Opening windows on two sides of the house, running range hoods and bath fans that actually vent outdoors, and using a mechanical ventilation system where one exists all exchange indoor air for outdoor air.

Filtration removes particles physically. A well-sized portable filter unit, or a properly rated filter in a forced-air system, captures particulate matter without adding anything to the air. Two details decide whether it helps: the unit must be sized to the room, and the filter must be changed on schedule.

Choosing a filter without over-buying

What about smells?

An ionizer will not fix an odor problem, and neither will a particle filter, because odor is molecules rather than particles. Odors have a source: moisture, biological soil, food residue, a dry drain trap, a bin that has never been washed inside. Find it, remove it, ventilate.

If a smell suggests mold, that is a remediation question rather than a cleaning or air-treatment question, and moisture repair comes before anything else. Mold remediation is a separate trade, and a device promising to handle it in an occupied room is the clearest signal to stop and call someone qualified.

Why the category persists

Air treatment devices sell a reassuring idea: a machine in the corner solving an invisible problem without anyone having to change a habit. The absence of feedback helps, because you cannot see whether it worked, so the device is never contradicted.

That is the general shape of the products collected in cleaning myths worth unlearning, and it is why the boring answer keeps winning. Vacuum with a good filter, wash textiles, control moisture, ventilate, and dust with a damp or electrostatic cloth rather than a dry feather duster that redistributes everything.
