Why does wool shrink?
Wool fibers are covered in tiny overlapping scales, like shingles on a roof. Heat and moisture open the scales, and agitation makes them slide past each other in one direction only. They ratchet together, the fabric tightens, and the garment gets smaller and denser. This is felting, and it cannot be undone.
Cotton shrinkage is different and much gentler. Cotton fibers relax and pull in, which is why a cotton shirt can sometimes be stretched partly back. Wool has physically interlocked, so stretching just tears it.

What actually causes felting: the three factors
Heat, moisture, and mechanical action have to be present together. Remove any one and wool is remarkably resilient.
Warm water alone will not felt a sweater sitting still in a basin. Agitation alone in cold water does far less damage. It is the combination, and a washing machine on a warm cycle supplies all three at once in abundance.
Temperature change is the fourth, quieter factor. Moving wool from hot wash water to a cold rinse shocks the fibers and tightens them further, which is why the rinse should match the wash temperature.
Why the washing machine is the usual culprit
A standard cycle tumbles, spins, and changes temperature, which is the felting recipe exactly. A top loader with a center agitator is the most damaging of all, because it drags fabric back and forth against a post.
Even a wool or delicate cycle varies widely between machines. Some hold cool water and barely move; some still spin hard. Test with an inexpensive item before trusting a machine with a good sweater.
Hand washing is the reliable method: a basin of cool water, a small amount of wool-safe detergent, gentle squeezing rather than rubbing, and a rinse at the same temperature. Ten minutes of soaking does more than any amount of scrubbing.
Does regular detergent damage wool?
Yes. Most laundry detergents are alkaline and many contain protease enzymes, which are designed to digest protein stains. Wool is protein, so those enzymes attack the fiber itself and leave it weak, dull, and prone to holes.
Use a detergent labeled for wool or delicates, with a neutral pH and no enzymes. Use less than the label suggests, because residue in wool feels scratchy and attracts soil.

Why wringing and hanging destroy the shape
Wet wool is heavy and weak, and its fibers slide easily when loaded. Wringing twists and compresses them into permanent creases. Hanging a wet sweater lets gravity stretch the shoulders and lengthen the body, which is the mirror image of shrinkage and just as hard to fix.
Instead, press the water out. Lay the garment on a towel, roll the towel with the garment inside, and press down along the roll. Then unroll and lay the sweater flat on a dry towel, reshaping it to its original dimensions with your hands.
Dry flat, away from direct heat and sunlight. A radiator or a hot dryer will felt a damp sweater as thoroughly as a hot wash would.

Can a shrunken wool sweater be saved?
Sometimes partly, never fully. Soaking in cool water with a wool-safe conditioner or hair conditioner relaxes the fibers enough to let you stretch the garment gently back toward shape while damp, pinning it flat as it dries.
That works on mild shrinkage. It does not reverse true felting, because the scales have interlocked and the fabric structure has changed. A sweater that has gone stiff, dense, and fuzzy is permanently a smaller, thicker garment.

What about superwash and machine-washable wool?
Superwash wool has been treated to remove or coat the scales, so it resists felting and can usually be machine washed. It is a real category, not marketing, and the care label will say so.
Two cautions still apply. Superwash wool stretches more than untreated wool when wet, so it should still be dried flat rather than hung. And machine washable does not mean dryer safe; high heat still damages the fiber and the treated coating.
Read the label rather than assuming. Blends behave according to their weakest fiber, so a wool and cashmere blend follows cashmere rules.
The routine that keeps wool looking new
Wash wool far less often than other clothing. Wool resists odor naturally and airing a sweater overnight handles most wears. Three or four washes a season is typical for a sweater in regular use.
Spot-clean small marks with cool water and a dab of wool wash on a cloth, working from the outside of the mark inward. Let it air dry flat.
Store folded, never on hangers, because shoulders stretch. Keep wool clean before long storage, since moths are attracted to body oils and food residue rather than to clean wool itself, and pest problems are a separate trade to handle rather than a laundry question.
