The wash that actually works

Wash alone or with one other technical piece, on a gentle cycle, with a small amount of technical wash. Run an extra rinse. If a machine has an agitator post, use a laundromat front loader instead.
Tumble dry on low. Then check the beading by flicking water at a sleeve. If droplets sit up in beads, the jacket is done. If they spread and darken the fabric, it needs reproofing.
When to reproof, and how not to overdo it
Reproofing products come as wash-in treatments and spray-on treatments. Spray-on is the better choice for a jacket with a mesh liner or an insulated fill, because a wash-in treatment coats the inside as well and reduces breathability.
Do not reproof a dirty jacket. Treatment applied over grime bonds to the grime and comes off with it. Wash first, reproof second, then apply the low heat.
