Why Grease Needs a Solvent at All

Ordinary detergent cleans by surrounding oily soil with surfactant so water can carry it away. That works on light body oils and food grease. It fails on heavy, dried, or sticky deposits, because the surfactant cannot get into the mass fast enough.

A solvent works differently. It dissolves the oil directly, thinning it so it can be lifted or flushed. That is why a degreaser has a solvent in it and a general-purpose cleaner usually does not.

The two solvent families you will meet on a carpet product label are citrus terpenes and glycol ethers, sold as butyl.

What Each One Is

Citrus solvent is mostly d-limonene, distilled from citrus peel. It is a genuinely powerful oil solvent, effective on adhesives, gum, tar, wax, and cooking grease. It is not water-soluble on its own, so products emulsify it with surfactants.

Butyl degreaser uses a glycol ether -- most often butyl cellosolve -- that dissolves oils while remaining miscible with water. That dual nature is its whole advantage: it attacks grease and then leaves with the rinse water instead of staying in the pile.

Both are real solvents with real hazards. Neither is a mild product because it smells like fruit or comes in a spray bottle.

Which One Should You Use on Carpet?

Butyl for most carpet grease, citrus for the small stuff butyl cannot handle. Butyl rinses out with water, which matters enormously on carpet -- any solvent left in the pile becomes a soil magnet and can keep working on the backing long after you have finished. Citrus is stronger but stays behind more readily.

The exception is a specific class of problems: chewing gum, adhesive residue, tar, candle wax, crayon, and sticky label glue. Those are jobs where nothing water-based works and a small, controlled application of citrus solvent is the right call.

The Backing Risk Nobody Mentions

Most tufted carpet is held together by a latex adhesive that bonds the primary and secondary backings. Strong solvents can soften or degrade that adhesive. When it fails, the carpet delaminates -- the backing separates, and the area ripples, bubbles, or comes apart at a seam.

Delamination is not repairable by cleaning. It is a replacement or a re-stretch and patch.

Three practices keep the risk manageable:

  • Apply to a towel, not to the carpet, then transfer to the spot. This keeps solvent in the pile rather than flooding the backing.
  • Work small and work fast. Minutes of contact, not an hour of soaking.
  • Rinse thoroughly afterward with a water-based cleaner and extraction.

Ventilation and Personal Safety

Both solvents demand ventilation. Open windows, run a fan, and take breaks. Citrus solvent has a lower flash point than most water-based cleaners, so keep it away from open flame, pilot lights, and space heaters. Its strong scent also lingers in soft goods for days, which surprises people who assumed a natural product would smell pleasant at working concentration.

Neither product should be used around birds, which are extremely sensitive to airborne fumes and should be moved to a separate room with fresh air. Keep pets and children out of the area until the carpet is dry and the room has aired out.

The pH Trap With Butyl

Many butyl degreasers are formulated alkaline, because alkalinity boosts performance on greasy soil. That combination is effective and it is exactly what damages wool and factory stain-resist finishes.

Wool tolerates roughly pH 5 to 8 and no more. Nylon stain-resist treatments are acid-based and degrade under sustained alkalinity, meaning today's grease removal can buy next year's permanent stain. The Rinse Step Is Not Optional

Solvent left in carpet does two bad things. It keeps attracting oily soil, so the spot re-soils faster than the carpet around it and looks worse within weeks. And it stays in contact with the backing adhesive for far longer than the cleaning took.

After any degreaser, rinse with clear water or a neutral rinse and extract as much as possible. On a small spot, blot with a damp white towel repeatedly until nothing transfers, then blot dry and weight a folded towel over the area while it dries.   1. Lift the solid. Scrape gently with a spoon edge, working from the outside in. Do not grind.
  2. Absorb what you can. Blot with a plain white towel or dust with an absorbent powder, wait, and vacuum.
  3. Test the product in a hidden area at the dilution you intend to use.
  4. Apply to a towel, transfer to the spot, and let it work briefly.
  5. Agitate lightly with a soft brush, tips only, no scrubbing into the backing.
  6. Blot, then rinse with water and extract.
  7. Dry with airflow, weighting a towel over the area to catch anything wicking upward.

What About the Smell?

Grease that has soaked into carpet often leaves odor behind after the visible stain is gone, particularly cooking grease near a kitchen doorway. Solvent removes the oil; it does not always remove the rancid smell of oil that has been oxidizing in the backing for months.
