TL;DR

Soil looks like a color change on an intact surface. The weave is still continuous. Under angled light the texture matches the fabric next to it.
Scratch damage breaks the surface. You see loops pulled out of the weave, short broken fiber ends standing up, or a fuzzy halo where the yarn twist has come apart. Under angled light the texture is different, not just the color.
Most scratched furniture has both. The cat picks the same corner every time, so that corner is also the corner that gets the most contact, oil, and dust.
What Cleaning Genuinely Improves
Do not write off cleaning entirely, because it does real work on a scratched piece.
It removes the gray cast around the damage, which is usually oil and dust bonded to the disturbed fiber. Disturbed fiber holds soil far better than smooth fiber does, so scratched corners get dirty faster than anything else on the sofa.
It removes the scent markers left behind. Cats scratch partly to deposit scent from glands in their paws, and that scent invites repeat scratching in the same place. Cleaning does not eliminate the behavior, but a thoroughly cleaned surface is less obviously marked than one that has not been touched.
It lets you see the actual damage. Once the grime is off, you can judge whether the fabric is genuinely cut or just roughed up.

The Repair Options, Honestly Ranked
Pull the snag through, do not cut it. If a loop is long and still attached at both ends, thread it to the back side with a needle. Cutting a snag flush creates a permanent hole that grows.

Brush and steam-relax the nap. On velvet and chenille, lifted pile can often be coaxed back with light moisture and a soft brush. This does not work on a cut loop weave.
Reupholster the panel. Upholstery is built in panels bounded by seams. A skilled upholsterer can replace a single arm panel far more cheaply than the whole piece, if matching fabric exists.
Slipcover it. The least satisfying answer and often the most practical one, especially on a piece the cat has not finished with.
Replace the piece. Sometimes the honest answer, particularly on inexpensive furniture where repair costs approach replacement.
Which Fabrics Show It Worst

Linen and other loosely woven naturals snag readily and show the pulled yarn against a flat background.
Velvet and chenille show scratching as crushed and lifted pile, which sometimes recovers and sometimes does not.
Tight flat weaves in synthetics resist claws best among fabrics. Microfiber in particular has a very short dense pile that gives claws little to hook.

Redirecting the Behavior
This is not a cleaning question, and it is the part that actually solves the problem. Scratching is normal cat behavior for claw maintenance, stretching, and scent marking. It cannot be trained away, only redirected.
Put a scratching post directly next to the spot the cat already uses, not across the room. Match the orientation, since a cat that scratches a vertical sofa arm wants a vertical post and a cat that works the horizontal seat wants a flat pad.
