How long should carpet take to dry?
Six to twelve hours is the normal range for hot water extraction in a ventilated room. Low-moisture methods like encapsulation or bonnet cleaning are faster, often one to two hours. Anything past 24 hours signals a problem with water volume, extraction, airflow, or humidity, and it needs action rather than patience.
The four things that cause it
Over-wetting. More solution went into the carpet than the machine could recover. This is the most common cause with rental equipment, which sprays generously and recovers weakly.
Not enough extraction. Fast wand strokes leave most of the water behind. Suction needs contact time, and dry passes with no solution flowing are what actually pull liquid out.
Dead air. Carpet dries by evaporation, and evaporation stops when the air directly above the pile is saturated. A closed room with no fans reaches that state within an hour and then simply stops drying.
High humidity. On a rainy week, opening windows brings in moist air that cannot absorb anything. Fans alone will not fix that. You need a dehumidifier in a closed room.

The pad check
The important question is whether the water is in the carpet or under it. Those are different problems.
Press the heel of your hand into the carpet with your body weight for ten seconds, then lift. Look at three signals.

A wet pile dries with airflow. A wet pad will not, because the carpet on top of it acts like a lid. Air movers can pull moisture through carpet, but slowly, and a heavily soaked pad usually needs the carpet lifted at a corner so air can get underneath.
Rescue steps, in order
Move now. Every hour past 24 raises the odor risk.
- Stop adding water. No more cleaning, no more rinsing, no spot treatments.
- Get people and pets off the carpet. Foot traffic crushes the pile and slows evaporation, and walking on wet carpet can distort it permanently.
- Close the room. Windows and doors shut, unless the outside air is genuinely dry.
- Run a dehumidifier. Empty it or drain it continuously. This is the highest-value single item, and running a dehumidifier on carpet covers placement and settings.
- Add air movers or box fans. Aim them across the surface at a shallow angle, not straight down. Straight down creates a pressure bubble and dries a small circle. See where to place air movers.
- Re-extract if you can. A wet vacuum run over the carpet with slow, firm strokes will pull out a surprising amount even a day later.
- Lift a corner if the pad is soaked. Pull the carpet back off the tack strip at one corner, prop it up, and blow air into the space between carpet and pad. This is the only way to dry a pad in place.
- Reassess at 12 hours. If it is still wet after another half day of active drying, the pad is likely holding water and may need to come out.

What happens if you leave it
Damp carpet is a hospitable place. Within 24 to 48 hours you can get a musty smell, which is the first warning sign and is covered in the mildew smell that follows.
Beyond smell, prolonged dampness can loosen the latex bond that holds the primary and secondary backings together, which shows up later as bubbling or delamination. Moisture also relaxes the backing, and carpet that stays wet for days can develop ripples that require an installer to re-stretch.
If a carpet has been wet for more than 48 hours and there is visible growth or a strong musty odor, that is no longer a cleaning question. Mold remediation is a separate trade with its own standards, and the right move is to have it assessed rather than to keep cleaning.
Should you call the cleaner?
Yes. Carpet still wet the next day is a workmanship signal, and most cleaners want to know. Ask them to return with extraction equipment and air movers rather than to re-clean anything.
Note the time the crew left, the time you noticed it was still wet, and whether any fans were set up. Photograph the pooling if you can press water out by hand. That record is useful whether the conversation stays friendly or not.
