First, What Kind of Finish Do You Have?
The answer changes depending on what is actually protecting your wood.
Most floors installed in recent decades are surface finished with polyurethane, a clear plastic film sitting on top of the wood. Cleaning touches the film, not the wood, unless the film is worn through.
Older or higher-end floors may use a penetrating oil or a wax finish, which soaks into the fibers instead of sealing over them. Those are far more vulnerable, because there is no plastic barrier at all and acid reaches the wood directly.
Unfinished or very worn floors have no protection whatsoever and should never meet vinegar or standing water.
To find out which you have, put a drop of water in an inconspicuous spot. If it beads and sits, you likely have an intact surface finish. If it soaks in and darkens the wood within a minute, the finish is worn or penetrating, and you need to be much more careful. What the Acid Actually Does
Household vinegar is roughly 5 percent acetic acid. On a cured polyurethane surface, a single diluted pass does very little you can see.
The damage is cumulative. Repeated acid exposure slowly etches the finish, dulling the sheen, and in areas that get mopped weekly for years the difference becomes obvious next to a closet floor that never gets touched. Once the gloss is gone, cleaning will not bring it back -- the fix is screening and recoating the floor.
On oil or wax finishes, vinegar is much worse. It cuts through the wax layer, strips the protection, and leaves the wood exposed to the next spill.

There is one more consideration. If the finish has any gap, worn spot, or open seam, acid reaches raw wood, where it can darken the fibers and raise the grain.
Water Is the Bigger Problem
Wood is hygroscopic. It absorbs moisture and swells, releases it and shrinks, and it does that unevenly.
Standing water on a floor works into the seams between boards, into the gap at the edge of the room, and around any nail hole or worn patch. The result is cupping, where board edges rise higher than their centers, or crowning, or in bad cases permanent gaps and lifted finish.

The rule is damp, not wet. A properly wrung mop leaves the floor looking barely moist, and it should be dry within a minute or two. If you can see a wet sheen, there is too much water down.
The Method That Works
Start dry. Sweep, dust mop, or vacuum with the beater bar off. Grit is abrasive, and mopping over it grinds it into the finish.
Then damp mop with a pH-neutral wood floor cleaner diluted per the label, using a microfiber flat mop wrung until it is barely moist. Work in the direction of the boards, in sections, and change the water when it looks dirty.
Wipe spills as they happen rather than at cleaning time. Put felt pads under furniture legs. Use walk-off mats at entries and take shoes off, since most floor damage is grit tracked in from outside.

Also skip steam. Steam mops drive heat and moisture through the finish into the wood, and most flooring manufacturers prohibit them outright.
If Your Floor Is Already Dull
Dullness from acid or from a worn finish is not a cleaning problem. Adding more product usually makes it worse, and polishes build a film that eventually needs stripping.
The real repair is a screen and recoat: lightly abrading the existing finish and applying a fresh coat of polyurethane. That is a flooring contractor job, not a cleaning job, and it is far cheaper than a full sanding as long as the finish has not been worn through to bare wood.
