What the Pressure Does to Fiber
Carpet face fiber is fine yarn twisted and heat-set to hold its shape. Concentrated water at pressure untwists it, frays the tips, and tears loops out of loop-pile carpet entirely.
The damage looks like fuzzing, thin bare patches, and a texture that no longer matches the surrounding carpet. It is permanent, because the fiber is physically destroyed rather than compressed or soiled. Nothing brings it back.
Loop pile is the worst case. A single caught loop can run, pulling a line of yarn out the way a snag runs in a sweater.
What It Does to the Backing
The bigger structural problem is underneath. Carpet is held together by a latex layer bonding the primary backing, where the tufts are anchored, to the secondary backing.
Pressurized water forced down through the pile drives directly into that layer and separates it, which is delamination. The carpet then feels spongy and loose underfoot and rippling appears that stretching does not fix. On older carpet where the latex is already brittle, this happens almost instantly. Pressure also loosens tufts from the primary backing, so fibers start shedding continuously afterward.
The Water Problem Is Worse Than the Pressure
Even setting damage aside, volume alone disqualifies the tool. A pressure washer delivers gallons per minute with zero recovery. All of it goes into the carpet, through it, into the pad, and into the subfloor.

The One Legitimate Exception
Synthetic outdoor rugs are the narrow case where a pressure washer can be reasonable, because they are built for it. Polypropylene outdoor rugs have solution-dyed fiber, an open weave that drains, no absorbent pad, and no latex bond to destroy.
Even then, keep the pressure low, use a wide fan tip at 25 or 40 degrees, and stay at least 12 to 18 inches back. Work with the weave rather than against it, and test a corner first. Lay the rug on a driveway or patio, never on grass or dirt.

What Never Goes Near a Pressure Washer
Wool rugs of any kind, and especially handmade ones, where the value and the fiber are both at risk. Silk and viscose rugs, which are damaged by ordinary water and destroyed by pressure. Any rug with fringe, since the fringe will shred. Antique or oriental rugs, which belong in a specialist rug plant.

What to Use Instead
