The three ways a pad damages a floor

Mechanical. Adhesive-backed pads bond to the finish and take it with them when the rug is moved. Grit trapped between a hard pad and the floor acts like sandpaper under foot traffic.

In a wet Oregon winter, in a basement, or over a crawlspace with poor vapor control, that is enough to cup solid hardwood and to darken it. The rug does not have to be wet -- ambient humidity is enough over a season.

The check that takes two minutes
Twice a year, lift the rug and pad and look at the floor.
Feel it with a bare hand for stickiness. Look at it from a low angle in daylight for haze. Check the color of the wood under the rug against the wood outside it -- some difference is normal from light exposure, but a hard-edged rectangle is not. Look for cupping by laying a straight edge across a few boards. Look at the pad itself for crumbling, tackiness, or color transfer.
Then vacuum both the floor and the pad, leave everything open for an hour, and put it back. This one habit catches nearly every pad problem while it is still reversible.
What to do when damage has appeared
Sticky residue and light haze. Try the flooring manufacturer's recommended cleaner first, applied to a cloth.
