What Not to Try
Do not use fabric dye or a permanent marker. Fabric dyes are made for immersion at temperature, and applied cold they sit on the surface, run when wet, and transfer onto socks and feet. Markers fade to an odd color within months and make a later professional repair harder.
Do not clean it repeatedly hoping it changes, and do not bleach the surrounding carpet to match. The second produces a larger, blotchy, unevenly bleached area rather than an even tone.
