Engine oil comes next. Warm the engine if it will start, and if not, pull the drain plug cold and let it sit. Used motor oil is accepted free at most auto parts stores and county collection sites. Two-stroke snowmobiles also carry injector oil in a separate reservoir, and four-stroke sleds have a gearcase to drain.
Coolant is the third. Antifreeze is sweet-tasting and toxic to pets and wildlife, so catch it in a sealed container and take it to the same facility that takes your oil.
Finally, pull the battery. Sealed lead-acid batteries are recyclable and often carry a core credit at parts stores. The same handling rules apply as when you dispose of a car battery.
What Is Actually Worth Selling
Before you send a machine to scrap, look at the parts market. Used powersports parts sell steadily because dealers stop stocking them after a model goes out of production.
The parts that reliably move are the ones people break: plastic body panels and fenders in good condition, the seat, handlebars and controls, the front rack and bumper, wheels and rims, and the CDI box or ECU. On snowmobiles, add the windshield, hood, skis, and track if it still has lugs.
The parts that rarely sell are the engine, if it is the reason the machine died, and anything cracked, faded, or sun-rotted. Do not spend a month photographing low-value hardware. Pull the four or five obvious items, list them, and move the carcass out.
Scrap Yard vs Haul Away
An ATV frame is steel and the engine is a mix of aluminum and steel, so a drained machine has real scrap value as a unit. Yards typically price it as mixed light iron rather than paying a premium, and they will refuse it with fluids in it or a battery attached.
The catch is transport. A yard will not come get it. You need a trailer, a ramp, and someone to help push a 600-pound machine with seized wheels or a frozen track. The Loading Problem
